Disinfo: Moldova: The West is pushing Chisinau to attack Transnistria

Summary

The West is pushing Chisinau to abandon its status as a neutral country under the constitution, the same thing that happened to Kyiv. For this reason Maia Sandu was ordered to replace the old premier with a new one. Also Sandu refuses to continue the '5+2' talks on Transnistria because she has military solutions in mind for Tiraspol.

Disproof

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative aiming to portray Moldova as a puppet state of the West.

Moldova is a sovereign country and a parliamentary republic. Moldovan President Maia Sandu accepted the Prime Minister's resignation on Friday 10 February 2023 and said she would hold consultations with parliamentary parties on nominating a new prime minister. A new PM was nominated, and subsequently invested on 16 February.

According to the Constitution, the Republic of Moldova is a neutral country and this status can only be changed through a referendum. However, such a referendum is not planned or even being discussed.

The country's president, Maia Sandu, declared (min. counter 34-38) in July 2022 that Moldova remains a neutral country, but will strengthen its defence: "The Republic of Moldova is and will remain a peaceful country. (…) Even if our defence system is in a very bad situation, if it wasn't for this Russian aggression against Ukraine, we probably wouldn't have discussed much about the need to equip the army. (…) We don't want anyone to involve us in the war, but it is a reality for which we must prepare".

Transnistria is de-facto controlled by Russia since 1992, the ECHR ruled. Russia has violated human rights and the right to freedom and security in Transnistria.

It is not Moldova with its 2,5 million population which tries to "provoke Russia" (the latter with a population of some 140 million as of 2022).

In her interview, published on 22 January 2022, President of Moldova, Maia Sandu said: "Of course, it is an important task for us to find a solution (on Transnistria). But this solution must be peaceful, diplomatic. It must be a solution that respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. And reintegration must result in a functional state. These three elements are extremely important”.
