The government has started the process of ratifying the Lanzarote convention. It sets out that states in Europe, and beyond, shall adopt specific legislation and take measures to prevent sexual violence, to protect child victims and to prosecute perpetrators. The Convention is a major step forward in the prevention of sexual offences against children, the prosecution of perpetrators and the protection of child victims. The protection of children is at the heart of this convention. It focuses throughout on respect for children’s rights, ensuring their well-being, responding to their views, needs and concerns, and acting at all times in their best interests.
