DISINFO: Pashinyan is a Western tool to squeeze Russia out of the South Caucasus
SUMMARY
The colour revolution in Armenia took place under the auspices of the West and Turkey, and its main beneficiary is US Presidential Security Adviser John Bolton, who called on Yerevan to abandon historical patterns.
The goal of the collective West and Turkey is to tear Armenia away from Russia, to push the Russian Federation out of the South Caucasus, and PM Nikol Pashinyan voluntarily became their tool.
RESPONSE
This disinformation claim was made in the overall context of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan shortly after Baku launched a military push agaisnt the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave.
This is part of a recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative portraying the West as an aggressive and destabilising power all over the world and the Caucasus in particular, as well as about Russia as the ultimate target of international events. The article advances the claim that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to pre-empt Russia's weakening position in the region.
The article also advances the narrative about lost sovereignty and color revolutions. This narrative portrays any spontaneous disorders and civil uprisings in other states, especially the former Soviet republics, as West-funded "coups".
The peaceful protests of hundreds of thousands of Armenian citizens in 2018 began in response to former president Serzh Sargsyan's running for the position of prime minister, which many citizens saw as an unjust attempt to run for a third consecutive term as president and remain the most powerful person in Armenia. Sargsyan stepped down due to public pressure and Pashinyan was elected as prime minister on 8 May and reelected in June 2021.
