DISINFO: 41 dead in Austria after getting Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine

SUMMARY

41 people have died in Austria after being vaccinated with Pfizer/BioNtech. People have also died in Norway and Germany after being administered this vaccine, of which Ukraine ordered 10 million doses.

RESPONSE

This is a recurrent disinformation case in pro-Kremlin media outlets about the alleged negative effects of the Pfizer/BioNTech (and other Western produced) vaccines on human health. It forms part of a larger narrative to promote the Russian Sputnik V vaccine globally.

The Austria’s Federal Office for Safety in Health Care did report on 1 March 2021 about the death of 41 people after getting vaccinated with BioNTech/Pfizer. The fact that these people died after being vaccinated with Pfizer/BioNtech does not automatically mean that their deaths were caused by the vaccine.
