Summary

There is no freedom, no democracy within the associations of states of the EU and NATO, and there never has been such freedom and democracy, because all decisions are taken exclusively only under pressure and dictation of the so-called 'Big Brother' - the United States.

Disproof

This claim represents a recurring pro-Kremlin propaganda narrative about US presence in Europe.

The US does not control the EU or NATO. The EU Member States are sovereign countries and make sovereign decisions about their own security and foreign policies, including relations with Russia. The decisions in the EU are made by the directly elected European Parliament, the European Commission together with the European Council (the governments of the 27 EU countries).

As for NATO, ever since its creation on 4 April 1949, at the heart of the Alliance has been the collective defence and security of all its members. All NATO decisions are made by consensus, after discussion and consultation among member countries. Allies decide whether to engage in a crisis management operation on a case-by-case basis and by consensus. NATO and US military presence in these states is possible only on the basis of the clear consent of the hosting nation.

This is a recurring disinformation narrative about NATO and its military exercises. It claims that NATO supplies Ukraine with weapons secretly and in circumvention of international law. Such messages also imply that NATO-Ukraine joint war games threaten Russia's security and serve as a justification of its military build-up along Ukraine’s border.

NATO is a defensive alliance, whose purpose is to protect its member states. During the Warsaw summit in July 2016, NATO has made it clear that: "The Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia". The Brussels Summit Declaration from 2018 concludes that “Russia’s aggressive actions, including the threat and use of force to attain political goals, challenge the Alliance and are undermining Euro-Atlantic security and the rules-based international order.”
