Disinfo: Biolabs in Ukraine financed by Joe Biden's son

Summary

The investment fund of Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, Seneca Thornton, was involved in the financing of Ukrainian biolabs that, according to Moscow, were part of the Pentagon's bioweapons programme.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about biolabs in Ukraine being part of US biological warfare efforts.

The claim is made in the context of Russia's unprovoked and unjustified military invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022.

According to the UN, there are no signs of any biological weapons programme conducted in Ukraine, despite the claims made by Russia.

Russia's allegations about the alleged biological weapons programmes in Ukraine have been also debunked by independent media.

No evidence was provided about Seneca Thornton's involvement in financing Ukrainian biolabs. The firm, however, was in the crosshairs of another scandal: in a 2020 report, Senate Republicans alleged that Seneca Thornton, which was co-founded by Hunter Biden, got USD 3.5 million from the former mayor of Moscow's wife. At the time, Hunter Biden's lawyer said that the former had no interest in Rosemont Seneca Thornton and was not its co-founder. Hunter Biden was, however, the co-founder and CEO of the investment firm Rosemont Seneca Advisors, but it is unclear whether there are any connections between it and Rosemont Seneca Thornton.

Disinfo: Sofia will have to buy Russian gas in rubles

Sofia will have to buy Russian gas in rubles whether it likes it or not. Russia will continue to deliver gas based on the conditions laid down in the contracts, only the currency of payments will change, and Gazprom was instructed to amend the contracts.

Disproof

A manipulative pro-Kremlin narrative seeking to convince people that there is no other choice but to pay for Russian gas in rubles.

The existing contracts regulate the currency of payments. Russia would break these contracts by forcing others to pay in rubles and Gazprom cannot unilaterally amend the contracts.

Disinfo: Ukraine is not a sovereign state, but completely subordinate to NATO and the US

In Ukraine, all decisions are made at the suggestion of Washington. Discussions with the Kyiv authorities are being conducted by the US through the appropriate channels of communication. Then everything is presented as a decision of the Ukrainian side, but in fact it is not. Formally, Ukraine is a sovereign state, but in essence it is completely subordinate to NATO structures, primarily the United States.

Disproof

Recurring disinformation narrative about the Ukrainian statehood. Тhe statement was made in the context of the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Ukrainian-Russian peace discussions, trying once again to present Ukraine as a non-sovereign country, as a puppet of the West.

Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically-elected president and parliament. Ukraine has a functioning government and economy, it is a member of many international organisations (e.g. United Nations, Council of Europe), and a party to international agreements. Ukraine has bilateral diplomatic relations with the majority of countries.

Disinfo: Russia attacked because of Kyiv’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements

Russia launched its military operation at the end of February, after seven years of Ukraine's failure to implement the Minsk agreements and Moscow's eventual recognition of the Donbas republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the war in Ukraine, actively trying to legitimise Russia’s unjustified invasion of the country. This narrative is claiming that Ukraine is responsible for the war because the country did not implement the Minsk agreements.

Contrary to the claims, the main impediment to a peace settlement in Donbas before the invasion was, in fact, Russia’s and its proxies’ deliberate unwillingness to implement the Minsk agreements. Moscow has been illegally providing weapons to the separatists since 2014. By making statements alleging that Ukraine had done nothing to implement the Minsk agreements, Moscow and the separatists it backed were delaying a peace settlement and trying to deflect attention away from Russian responsibility.
