DISINFO: Borrell's proposal on the 2014 Ukrainian crisis proves coup in Ukraine was artificially created

SUMMARY

[EU High Representative] Borrell's proposal on the Ukrainian crisis is proof that the Ukrainian problem, with the Western-inspired 2014 coup, was artificially created as an ideological cover for Russia's political, economic, technological, and humanitarian containment to ensure the West's hegemony in Europe and the world at large.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives painting the 2013-14 protests in Kyiv as a coup d'état orchestrated by NATO and the West and accusing the West of anti-Russian policies, Russophobia and allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda to contain, weaken and ruin Russia, aiming to portray Russia as a victim and deflect any responsibility for Moscow’s illicit actions.

There was no coup d’état in Kyiv in 2014; this is a longstanding pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine's Euromaidan. The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan protests was a reaction by broad segments of the Ukrainian population to former president Viktor Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013.

Before Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Kyiv and Western nations had been trying to conduct a dialogue with Russia on all disputed issues, including security guarantees. Russia cut short all attempts at achieving a compromise over security guarantees by attacking full force on Ukraine.

Neither the West, nor the US are at war with Russia or the Russian people. Since Russia launched its unjustified aggression against Ukraine, the West has been calling for Russian withdrawal from Ukraine incl. the illegally occupied Crimea and a peaceful settlement.

The current deterioration in relations between the West and Moscow is the consequence of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Judging by statements from some Russian politicians, confirmed by Putin's long speech 30 September announcing the annexation of four more regions of Ukraine, it is Moscow who has hostile intentions against the West and makes no secret about it, while the West is compelled to deter such Russian actions. It is Russia who is waging a hybrid war, fusing soft and hard power to achieve Russia’s ends with both political and military means.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell said, inter alia, that “We will continue supporting the Ukrainian people and ensure accountability for the violations of international law and war crimes committed in Ukraine. The news coming from the liberated cities is really important to know what has happened there. Together with the [European] Commission, we are looking at the options at our disposal to ensure accountability, and the discussion will continue on that”.

Read similar cases claiming that The West wants to weaken and ruin Russia, make everyone a colony, that the US and the EU organised a coup d'état in Kyiv creating an extremely militarised Nazi state, that HR Borrell’s words about turning the EU into a military power are Russophobic and that Borrell: it is time for Europeans to freeze to death for the sake of democratic ideals.
