Disinfo: British intelligence officers prepared the MH17 crash

Summary

Speaking about British intelligence, one must mention its involvement in the crash of the Malaysian Boeing Flight MH17 in the summer of 2014. There is a document that belongs to the Security Service of Ukraine, which reported on the secret visit of two MI6 officers to the ATO (Anti-Terrorist Operation) zone two weeks before the crash. Taking into account other factors, it can be reasonably assumed that British intelligence officers controlled the preparation of this special operation.

Disproof

One of the multiple disinformation narratives on the downing of flight MH17 denying Russia's responsibility.

The Dutch-led criminal investigation by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has been ongoing since 2014. On 28 September 2016, the JIT announced that flight MH17 was shot down by a missile from the 9M38 series, which was launched by a BUK TELAR missile system. The system was transported from the Russian Federation to an agricultural field near the town of Pervomaiskiy in Eastern Ukraine, from where the missile was launched. After firing, the system, with one missing missile, went back to the Russian Federation. On the 24 May 2018, the JIT announced its conclusion that the BUK TELAR used to shoot down MH17 came from the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade, a unit of the Russian armed forces from Kursk in the Russian Federation.

On the basis of the investigation conducted by the JIT, consisting of law enforcement agencies from Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, Ukraine and the Netherlands, the Dutch Public Prosecution Service is prosecuting Igor Vsevolodovich Girkin, Sergey Nikolayevich Dubinskiy, Oleg Yuldashevich Pulatov and Leonid Volodymyrovych Kharchenko for causing the crash of flight MH17 and murdering all 298 persons on board. The Public Prosecution Service alleges that the four cooperated to obtain and deploy the BUK TELAR with the aim of shooting down an aircraft. Public hearings started on 9 March 2020 in the Netherlands.

The European Union and NATO have called on the Russian Federation to accept its responsibility and to fully cooperate with all efforts to establish accountability. On the basis of the JIT’s conclusions, the Netherlands and Australia are convinced that Russia is responsible for the deployment of the Buk installation that was used to down Flight MH17. The two governments are formally holding Russia accountable.

On top of that, on 10 July 2020, the Dutch government decided to bring Russia before the European Court of Human Rights for its role in the downing of Flight MH17. As stated on the government's website, it "attaches importance to continuing the meetings with Russia on the matter of state responsibility. The purpose of these meetings is to find a solution that does justice to the enormous suffering and damage caused by the downing of Flight MH17."

You can see other examples of pro-Kremlin disinformation on the MH17 case in our database, such as claims that the Security Service of Ukraine imposed the theory that MH17 was shot down by a Russian BUK; that Ukrainians shot down MH17 using Kolchuga station with the help of NATO; that the crash of MH17 was triggered by an explosion on board; that the plane was not downed by a BUK missile, but rather by a Ukrainian fighter; that the trial in The Hague is not justice but information warfare; or that it is a US provocation against Russia.

Disinfo: Colour revolutions and NGOs lead to the destruction of states, Armenia is an example

We are breaking the arc of instability around Russia.

Why did Pashinyan capitulate? Pashinyan is an Armenian Navalny, he came to power after a coup d’etat, and then legitimised his rule. This is the result when a non-systemic oppositionist, behind whom is the American embassy, takes power in the state. Nowhere, and never, does the colour revolution bring good. Not in any country. […]

A lesson for everyone is that colour revolutions lead to the destruction of a state. The largest American embassy leads to the destruction of the [Armenian] state. Soros’ NGOs undermine state structures. This is a lesson for the entire post-Soviet region.

Disproof

This case presents a mix of multiple recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives on encircling Russia, colour revolutions, and the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, claming that the peaceful protests in most of the post-Soviet states are directed against Russia.

This recurring pro-Kremlin narrative paints all manifestations of popular discontent in the region as colour revolutions, portrays entire nations of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe as pathologically Russophobic, and alleges that the West is attempting to encircle Russia and create instability around all Russian border.

Disinfo: Pashinyan was brought to power by the West to surrender Nagorno-Karabakh

Pashinyan was put as the head of Armenia not just by Soros, but by the secret services of foreign states, primarily the UK and the US. The purpose of bringing him to power was as follows: to surrender Nagorno-Karabakh, then surrender Zangezur and provide a direct pipeline from both fields in Azerbaijan and Central Asia to Turkey. Thus, we are talking about huge, colossal earnings of many financial structures (some of them linked to Mr. Soros) and at the same time pushing Russia away from these hydrocarbons.

Disproof

Conspiracy with no evidence given. Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative alleging that the protests in 2018 in Armenia were a colour revolution mixed with a narrative about the recent military escalation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was not brought to power by the Western secret services to surrender Nagorno-Karabakh. There was no coup d'etat in 2018 in Armenia, but peaceful protests of hundreds of thousands of people in response to Serzh Sargsyan's decision to take on the post of prime minister after serving for more than a decade as the country’s president. Sargsyan resigned in response to overwhelming opposition pressure, admitting that he was "wrong". "The street movement is against my tenure. I am fulfilling your demand," his statement said.

Disinfo: Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a vassal of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

According to the agreement between Erdoğan and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he is the sultan and the Ukrainian president is his vassal.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative on Ukraine and its relations with Turkey, consistent with a narrative about Ukraine being under external control.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not a vassal of the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. They are presidents of two independent nations, whose relations are based on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
