Disinfo: Brits, Poles and Americans are fomenting chaos in Belarus

Summary

Brits, Poles, and Americans are openly engaged in fomenting chaos in Belarus.

Disproof

This is part of an ongoing Russian disinformation campaign on Belarus based on recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives, such as accusing other countries of interference and portraying popular protests against electoral fraud in the country as a Western-led colour revolution, in this case promoted by NATO. No evidence is provided to support any of the claims. Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians have been protesting against a massive vote-rigging and police violence since 9 August 2020. On 16 August 2020 Belarus witnessed the largest rallies in the city of Minsk and dozens smaller towns and localities in its history. On 19 August 2020 the European Council called Belarus's elections neither free nor fair. See other examples of pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives in Belarus, such as claims that the EU reaction to Lukashenko’s victory is an example of Western double standards; that the same lack of democracy and repression is present in EU countries that criticise Minsk, and that the West wants to prepare another Maidan in the country; or that Belarusians, Ukrainians and Russians are one single nation.

Netherlands to build special houses for 5G opponents

The Netherlands will build special houses which block electromagnetic radiation. These houses are meant for people who experience headaches and insomnia as a result of 5G.

Disproof

Recurring conspiracy theory on 5G. According to World Architecture, the aim of building 100 new homes is to establish the smartest neighbourhood in the world. The settlement will be self-sufficient in terms of energy and food production, as well as "smart homes" which will use technology according to the needs and consumer habits of the residents. Smart homes have nothing to do with the 5G conspiracies around accompanying illnesses. On the contrary, the project relies on the advancement of technology, including 5G to expand and integrate technology into homes, cars, daily activities, etc. See related disinformation cases about 5G.

George Soros is trying to influence processes in Belarus and around the world

George Soros turned 90 years old. But despite that age, he is trying to influence processes around the world. In the USA he is trying to hinder President Trump, in Belarus he mixed up everything in such a way that it is still questionable whether this time “batko” Lukashenko will endure, and in Lebanon, he is committing bloody riots.

Disproof

Recurring disinformation narrative about the billionaire and the philanthropist George Soros, presenting him as a person who aims to control political systems in the world and presenting Open Society Foundation as a tool for organising colour revolutions. Soros has been accused of a wide range of sins such as: destabilising Europe, attacking churches and traditional values as well as sponsoring the film "Joker" as a tutorial for colour revolutions. In this claim, new unsubstantiated accusations appeared - involvement in the events in Lebanon and Belarus. Pro-Kremlin media often paint popular protests as "colour revolutions" provoked by Soros. This is also present in the case of Georgia, Ukraine, Czechia, Venezuela, Bulgaria, Armenia, Slovakia and now in Belarus. In Belarus, the foundation is not active. Soros foundation used to operate there between 1993-1997, with branches in Minsk and Vitebsk but stopped operations due to conflicts with the authorities. Read other examples of pro-Kremlin disinformation on the US racial justice protests in our database, such as claims that the far-left Democrat organisations supported by Soros aim to oust Trump; or that the US protests are directly organised by George Soros, or that Soros controls current political elite in Ukraine and plays important role in the events in Belarus. EU tries to force regime change in Belarus in every way possible

The EU is pressing every way to change the regime in Belarus, and does not even hide this in public discussions. This has for long been known and understood.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Belarus and the EU. The EU continues a step-by-step approach in its engagement with Belarus, supporting its civil society and victims of repression. It has also said that the elections were neither free nor fair. However, the protests in Belarus erupted to contest the results of the presidential election in Belarus on the 9th of August, which are considered fraudulent by large part of Belarusian society. See similar disinformation cases alleging that Russia has neutralised many Western attempts to topple the Belarusian government; the West pursues Maidan policy towards Belarus to encircle Russia.
