Pro-Kremlin media outlets frequently voice unfounded accusations that Ukrainian troops are torturing the prisoners of war, as well as the civilian population.

Russia's claims that video footage showing dead bodies on the streets of Bucha is staged have been fact-checked and debunked by the BBCBellingcat, The Atlantic Council, Mediazonathe InsiderSky News, the New York Times and others.

Accounts of violence against civilians in Bucha have been collected by the Human Rights Watch:

"On March 4, Russian forces in Bucha, about 30 kilometers northwest of Kyiv, rounded up five men and summarily executed one of them. A witness told Human Rights Watch that soldiers forced the five men to kneel on the side of the road, pulled their T-shirts over their heads, and shot one of the men in the back of the head. “He fell [over],” the witness said, “and the women [present at the scene] screamed.”

The President of Ukraine, who visited the liberated town of Bucha, said:

"These are war crimes and they will be recognized by the world as genocide. We are aware of thousands of people killed and tortured, with their limbs cut off. Raped women, murdered children. I believe this is genocide"

The European Union has condemned in the strongest possible terms the reported atrocities committed by the Russian armed forces. The EU called for accountability for human rights and international law violations by the Russian Armed Forces, including full support for the investigation launched by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Disinfo: The events in Bucha are just a cynical provocation by Kyiv

In the Bucha case, the West has invented a "false scenario" to justify the new package of sanctions against Russia, including the mass expulsion of Russian diplomats and the stalling of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.

The Western press, especially the US press, is "complicit" in this provocation by blocking the emergence of an "alternative view", the truth, on the Bucha tragedy, in addition to spreading fake news. The events in Bucha are nothing but a "cynical provocation" by the Kyiv regime. There is sufficient evidence to prove Russia's innocence and to close the case, as no civilians were harmed while the city was under Russian control.

Disproof

This is a disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin media denying the involvement of Russian troops in a massacre in the town of Bucha near Kyiv.

Disinfo: Military operation was launched because Kyiv did not implement Minsk agreements

Moscow launched its operation after Ukraine failed to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements signed in 2014 and Russia finally recognised the Donbas republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the war in Ukraine, actively trying to legitimise Russia’s invasion of the country. This narrative is claiming that Ukraine is responsible for the war because the country did not implement the Minsk agreements.

Contrary to the claims, the main impediment to a peace settlement in Donbas before the invasion was, in fact, Russia’s and its proxies’ deliberate unwillingness to implement the Minsk agreements. Moscow has been illegally providing weapons to the separatists since 2014.

Disinfo: Srebrenica massacre [1995] was a provocation staged by Western security services

Srebrenica has become a symbol of the genocide of the Muslim popuation which, according to the West, was perpetrated by Bosnian Serbs in July 1995. With time, however, there emerged many facts confirming that the Srebrenica events were actually part of a well planned and executed operation by Western security services.

Disproof

The claim advances a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative minimising or outright denying the genocidal character of the Srebrenica massacre, as recognised by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia

The report does not cite a single "fact" which would confirm Western complicity in the violence against Bosniak Muslims. Moreover, it contradicts earlier statements by pro-Kremlin outlets which unambiguously presented the Srebrenica events as genocide, in order to justify Russia's own aggression against other states. See e.g. here and here for related debunks.
