Disinfo: CIA may be behind the coup in Guinea to prevent China’s access to resources

Summary

A picture in which colonel Mamady Doumbouya -who headed the coup in Guinea- appears in a meeting with US Africom members has led many to guess that this may have been a Western-backed coup, assisted by people like the CIA. The coup was unusually condemned by China, showing that Guinea has strategic importance for the Asian country. Guinea is a key exporter of bauxite, the metal needed to create aluminium, besides having big reserves of other mineral resources. A coup by a pro-western leader creates a big headache to Beijing, because it poses enormous risks to its delivery and fabrication chain and its strategic ambitions, and it keeps it dependent from a “hostile” country like Australia.

Disproof

Conspiracy theory not backed by any evidence, promoting a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about an evil, aggressive West always conspiring to promote its interests.

Unlike in other previous coups -either US-backed, as in some cases during the Cold War, or where the ousted leader was seen as contrary to US policy, as in Honduras in 2009, Egypt in 2013 or Zimbabwe in 2017-, in this case both the US and the EU immediately condemned the coup, a key element absent from this disinformation story.

Although it is true that colonel Mamady Doumbouya had received some training by US and French forces, he did in his capacity of close ally of the same president Alpha Condé ousted in the coup. Contrary to the claim, this military training doesn’t imply a Western endorsing of regime change. While some academic research suggest that US-trained militaries may be more likely to overthrow their governments -a finding contested by other researchers-, this doesn’t mean that those coups are backed or approved in any way by the US, and in fact this link has been often a source of embarrassment for the US military.

See other examples in our database, such as claims that Nicaragua’s government prevented a coup backed by the EU and the US, that the West is eager to stage a coup d’etat in Belarus, that the West attempts to form a belt of instability around Russia, that Euromaidan was a coup directed by the West, that sanctions should trigger hunger revolts for regime change in Syria, or that Victoria Nuland may be preparing a Ukrainian-style coup in Central America.

Disinfo: Sanctions are beneficial to Russia so the West should recognise Crimea as Russian

Instead of making gratuitous statements about the so-called "annexation" of Crimea, the French authorities would do better to recognise it as an integral part of Russia.

Russia has benefited from Western sanctions imposed on it after the peninsula was attached. Sanctions are not beneficial to the West. Sanctions are beneficial to Russia.

Crimea, offered to Ukraine within the USSR by Nikita Khrushchev in 1954, was reattached to Russia following the referendum held in March 2014, following the coup d'état in Ukraine in February of the same year. Kyiv continues to regard Crimea as Ukrainian territory.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the illegal annexation of Crimea and sanctions against Russia.

The impact of sanctions needs to be evaluated in the long run. However, primarily assessments show a significant and negative impact on the Russian economy.

Disinfo: There is democracy in Russia, since there are a lot of participants in the Duma elections

There is democracy in Russia, since there are a lot of participants in the Russian parliamentary elections.

Disproof

A large number of candidates does not guarantee that the whole electoral process meets the high standard of democracy. Many candidates were denied the right to register.

The OSCE was unable to observe and evaluate the electoral parliamentary elections of 17-19 September 2021 due to major limitations imposed by Russian Authorities.

Disinfo: Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visits the US which asked him to split the Orthodox world

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is paying a visit to the United States. This should come as no surprise as it was the United States and the West which forced him to grant autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine, thus splitting the Orthodox World.

Disproof

Pro-Kremlin disinformation outlets frequently attack the establishment of an autocephalous Ukrainian church. The Constantinople Patriarchy, not the US, decided to grant the autocephaly to the Ukrainian church. The final decision was made in January 2019, when all members of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate signed off the Tomos of autocephaly. The signing of the Tomos happened after months of careful preparation and consideration by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Holy Synod.
