Disinfo: Crimea was returned to Russia

Summary

Bloomberg talks about Putin’s achievements in 20 years. One of these is that Moscow succeeded in returning Crimea to Russia.

Disproof

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the illegal annexation of Crimea.

While the articles make reference to Bloomberg and its recent analysis of Putin's Russia, the later did not write that Crimea returned to Russia, but rather that Russia "annexed Crimea from Ukraine".

Crimea was illegally annexed by Moscow. On 27 March 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in which it stated that the referendum in Crimea was not valid and could not serve as a basis for any change in the status of the peninsula. On 17 December 2018, the UN General Assembly confirmed its non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea.

According to international law, Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Russia violated international law as well as key principles of the European security framework by illegally annexing the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol in 2014.

Syrian rebels and the White Helmets are preparing a chemical provocation in Syria

The Syrian rebels and their White Helmets allies are preparing a provocation with the use of chemicals in Syria to blame the Syrian authorities.

Disproof

This claim involves unfounded speculation, based on no supporting evidence, to smear the White Helmets, a humanitarian organisation and frequent target of pro-Kremlin disinformation, and Syrian opposition forces. This case involves a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative portraying the White Helmets as a Western-backed terrorist proxy and, implicitly, denying the responsibility of the Assad regime for chemical attacks perpetrated during the Syrian civil war.

The UN-OPCW Joint Investigative Mechanism found Syria’s government responsible for the April 2017 attack in Khan Shaykhun. On April 2018, Russia vetoed a US-drafted UN Security Council resolution that would have created a new inquiry to ascertain responsibility for chemical weapons attacks in Syria. In June  2018, the OPCW members granted it the power to assign responsibility for chemical attacks.

Ukraine is a Russophobic, Nazi state, controlled by the US

As of today, under the governance of the US, Ukraine can exist only in the following form: Russophobic and with Nazis in the streets.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives undermining the statehood of Ukraine and advancing a narrative about Nazis in Ukraine.

Ukraine is a sovereign, independent state. Relations between the US and Ukraine are bilateral relations between two independent countries. They are established on an equal basis. US policy is focused on strengthening a stable, democratic, prosperous and free Ukraine, more closely integrated into Europe and Euro-Atlantic structures.

The US owns the coronavirus and its cure

Coronavirus is an American product par excellence, according to the registry of inventions submitted in 2015, which was approved in 2018.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the US and about the coronavirus.

The claim that the United States has patented and owns the coronavirus goes back to viral incorrect claims that the virus, along with its vaccine is owned by the Pirbright Institute (a research institute in the UK), was funded by the American Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The institute works to prevent viral diseases of livestock. The Pirbright Institute clarified that they don’t work with human coronaviruses and that a patent that they hold is unrelated to the current coronavirus linked to Wuhan.
