Disinfo: The US cyber forces are hiding behind Lithuania

Summary

Lithuania does not have its own cybersecurity forces. All cyber activities of defence and offence from the territory of Lithuania are implemented by the US army. Washington always fights by hiding behind other countries.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the US presence in Europe, and lack of sovereignty of America's allies, in this case Lithuania.

It is not true that Lithuania “does not have its own cybersecurity forces”. Since January 1, 2018, National Cyber Security Centre at the Ministry of National Defence is operating in Vilnius. The purpose of its activities is cybersecurity.

This message is also linked to the initiative to establish in Lithuania EU Cyber Rapid Response Team (CRRT). Agreement about it was signed by Ministers of Defence from Lithuania, Croatia, Estonia, Netherlands, Romania, Spain in 2018. The US did not participate in this process.

Lithuania also collaborates in the security sphere, including cybersecurity, with other NATO countries. Lithuanian experts are participating in the work of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (based in Estonia) together with experts from the US and other states.

Russia is under siege by NATO

According to the plans of the collective West, the Republics, peoples and nations of the USSR should not live together, but conflict with each other.

Georgians and Ossetians, Georgians and Abkhazians confront each other, and this is where NATO appears. There is a war between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, and NATO is right there. Problems arise in Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, and NATO intends to penetrate all around. This happened in the Baltics, and they are going to do the same in Moldova and Belarus, the Republics of Central Asia and the Caucasus. And the main thing is that all this is directed against Russia. Russia is under siege by NATO.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about NATO and aggressive West, allegedly pursuing a belligerent and hostile anti-Russian agenda.

NATO is in no way directed against Russia or any other state. NATO is not involved in any of the mentioned conflicts. NATO’s objectives are set out in the 1949 Washington Treaty which forms the legal basis of the alliance. The treaty states that parties “are resolved to unite their efforts for collective defence and for the preservation of peace and security”.

Ukraine is a colony that does not have its own opinion on the international arena

The Anglo-Saxons are turning Ukraine into a 19th-century India. Ukraine is a pawn and a colony that does not have its own opinion on the international arena, and the people are cannon fodder, no one cares about their welfare.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine and Ukrainian statehood, which is often claimed to be under external control from the US, NATO, the EU, or IMF. The pro-Kremlin media often use the term "Anglo-Saxons" to collectively portray the West as "the other" and to reinforce the idea that Russia belongs to a different civilisation.

Ukraine is a sovereign state, one of the founding members of the United Nations. Neither US nor the EU countries control Ukraine. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by most of the free world but were violated by Russia in 2014.

The death of a Belarusian protester could be a “sacred sacrifice” to provide an impetus for further protests

It is possible that this death [of a Belarusian protester Raman Bandarenko] could be used as some sort of “sacred sacrifice” to provide an impetus for the protests and riots against President Alexander Lukashenko.

It will likely somehow be connected to him through claims of the opposition, since, for a while now, they’ve been losing steam and running in circles.

Disproof

An unfounded claim, using the trope of "sacred sacrifice". The concept is similar to that of "False Flag" - means of disinformation, frequently employed by pro-Kremlin disinformation outlets.

Mr. Bandarenka was detained efter being beaten up by masked plainclothesmen, who never identified themselves. Bandarenka was forced into an unmarked van. Two hours later, he was brought to a hospital by ambulance from a Police precinct in Central Minsk. This can be established from the admission documentation of the hospital. Despite several hours of urgent surgery, Mr. Bandarenko's life could not be saved.
