Both the EU and the US respect Russian sovereignty, while at the same time encouraging its democratisation. The West is not demonising Vladimir Putin. Its objections are based on factual concerns because of the illegal annexation of Crimea and the conflict in Eastern Ukraine which have seriously affected the bilateral political dialogue. The 28 EU Member States unanimously imposed restrictive measures against the Russian Federation in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and the deliberate destabilisation of a neighbouring sovereign country.The sanctions were imposed in a transparent manner, in accordance with its internal regulations.
