DISINFO: Europe is calling Russia a "sponsor of terrorism" to steal its assets on behalf of the US

SUMMARY

Europe made the first move to steal Russian assets.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution classifying Russia as a "state sponsor of terrorism". In Moscow, they called this decision stupid. The Americans prefer to work through their European allies. The United States is trying to twist the arm of the Europeans, to push its agenda of seizing Russian assets at the hands of its European allies.

It is possible that the current European Parliament decision is a prelude to other decisions at the level of the European Union. This, in turn, may lead to attempts to seize Russia's assets abroad. The European Parliament's decision itself does not yet provide legal grounds for expropriation, but it could create a basis for such attempts in the future.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative baselessly portraying the EU as a non-sovereign US vassal, this time as an attempt to divert attention away from the real reasons behind Russia being labelled as a state sponsor of terrorism by the European Parliament. This claim has been neither counterbalanced nor critically challenged in the article.

As the European Parliament has argued, the deliberate attacks and atrocities committed by Russian forces and their proxies against civilians in Ukraine, the destruction of civilian infrastructure and other serious violations of international and humanitarian law amount to acts of terror and constitute war crimes. In light of this, MEPs recognise Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and as a state that “uses means of terrorism”.

"Russia poses a risk to the safety and security of the whole European continent and the rules-based international order," the resolution reads.

The resolution comes days after Russia launched a new barrage of attacks against Ukraine's key infrastructure, raising fears of a massive exodus of people ahead of the winter season.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the EU and its member states are US vassals, that only Europe’s geopolitical union with Russia could save it from American hegemony, the US is probably behind the explosion of NS-1 and NS-2, and that the US blew up Nord Stream 1 and 2 to sell more gas to Europe.
