Disinfo: European leaders who send arms to Ukraine are war criminals

Summary

Leaders of European states headed by Germany can drag their peoples into huge problems. They become a party to the conflict by supplying arms to Ukraine. All heads of state that decided to supply arms sullied themselves and must be put to justice as war criminals.

Disproof

This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets claiming that Western military aid to Kyiv is aimed at spreading the war in Ukraine beyond its borders into Europe.

In reality, Western military assistance which includes both defensive and offensive weapons is used by Ukraine's Armed Forces to liberate its territory from occupants and restore sovereignty within its internationally recognised borders including illegally annexed Crimea and the occupied parts of Donbas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched what he called a special military operation against Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The land invasion was supported by airstrikes on military objects. Russian troops later started bombing and shelling civilian targets as well. Countless atrocities by Russian forces have since been reported - see for instance here and here.

Disinfo: Bucha is clearly a provocation as the corpses presented many anomalies

Russian authorities declared that on March 30, all their units left Bucha. One day later, the mayor of Bucha published one video in social media bragging about having achieved a great victory, but strangely, he didn’t mention any corpse in the streets. Then, on the fourth day, all these evidences emerged, right when members of the Ukrainian Security Service and members of the Ukrainian television and some Western media arrived to the place. Corpses were disposed in strange positions where they didn’t even showed signs of rigor mortis or non-coagulated blood.

Disproof

This is part of a wider pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign aiming to deny any Russian responsibility in the Bucha massacres and other atrocities during the war of aggression against Ukraine, despite massive evidence on the contrary. Allegations about anomalies in the corpses have been an integral part of this campaign. However, Russian claims that war crimes in Bucha were staged somehow have been specifically fact-checked and debunked by the Bellingcat, the Atlantic Council, Mediazonathe Insider and others.

Evidence of Russian atrocities in Bucha is overwhelming. Several executions and shooting of Ukrainian civilians in Bucha were recorded in video by witnesses and Ukrainian drones. Satellite images show that some of the corpses were already lying on the streets weeks before the Russian withdrawal. Incriminatory radio conversations by Russian troops were intercepted and released by German intelligence. Dozens of Bucha survivors have been interviewed by world-class international outlets, including The New York Times, BBC, The Washington Post, Associated Press, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, Radio France Internationale, Al Jazeera or El País. Ukrainian forensic teams are uncovering further evidence of these Russian war crimes. Other false allegations denying Russian involvement in the Bucha massacres were further debunked by some of those international outlets like Deutsche Welle, El País or France24. Furthermore, a similar pattern of Russian war crimes is emerging in places like Borodyanka, Chernihiv, Hostomel and others.
