DISINFO: Every political choice in Italy is subordinated to the orders of Brussels or Washington
SUMMARY
Italy is a country with limited sovereignty, where every political choice is subordinated to the orders of Brussels or Washington. If Europe implodes, then Italy will do nothing but cunningly adapt to the new trend.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Italy has lost its sovereignty.
Italy is a parliamentary republic with a head of government - the prime minister - appointed by the president and a head of state - the president. The Parliament is composed of 2 houses: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic.
Italy is a founding member of EU. It has always supported the European integration process, deemed fundamental to promoting and achieving the goals of peace, freedom, security and wellbeing for Italians and for Europeans in general. Italy has accompanied the process of European integration in all its stages, making Rome an essential crossroads in the history of the construction of European unity.
In the last years, the narrative of lost or limited sovereignty has been employed in several European elections and referenda. Convincing voters that their grievances are the result of resources being funneled to “others” – foreigners, bankers, corporations, minorities – has proven to be an efficient manipulation strategy. Indeed, combined with fueling nostalgia for a mythical national past, this narrative is one of the most damaging disinformation strategies out there. It has been deployed in connection with the Catalan independence referendum, Brexit, and in several national elections.
More recently this narrative has been used in the context of the Invasion of Ukraine to attack Ukraine statehood stating that Ukraine is directly controlled from the United States.
