Disinfo: For the US and Europe, Ukraine is just a training ground against Russia

Summary

For the US and Europe, Ukraine and Ukrainians are just a training ground and theatre of military operations against Russia. They did not intend and are not going to help Ukraine, give money to former political opponents, provide them with vaccines or treat them. This is not within their plans. The State Department resolves its geopolitical issues in the region, playing on the feelings of Ukrainians with their eternal thirst for freebies.

Disproof

Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative on Ukraine and its statehood, alleging that the country is abandoned.

Ukraine is not abandoned and is not a training ground against Russia for the US or Europe.

Ukraine is a priority partner for the European Union (EU). The EU supports Ukraine in ensuring a stable, prosperous and democratic future for its citizens and is unwavering in its support for Ukraine’s independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty. Since 2014, the EU and the Financial Institutions have mobilised more than €15 billion in grants and loans to support the reform process, with strong conditionality on continued progress.

Ukraine is a priority partner for the US too. US assistance to Ukraine since 2014 totals over $3.7 billion, plus three $1 billion sovereign loan guarantees. For financial year 2020, Congress has appropriated $698 million: $448 million for State/USAI programs and $250 million for USAI, and $50 million for lethal assistance.

To combat COVID, the United States has provided over $26 million in assistance in new and redirected funding. This funding will prepare laboratory systems, activate case-finding and event-based surveillance, support technical experts for response and preparedness, bolster risk communication and support water, sanitation and hygiene interventions for the most vulnerable populations in eastern Ukraine. Assistance will also counter disinformation, bolster media’s health reporting capacity, expand the government’s ability to continue operating under pandemic-related restrictions and support Ukraine’s economic recovery.

Lithuania is not an independent state and does not have an army

Lithuania wants to host next year’s NATO summit in exchange for loyalty.

Lithuania is planning to grow its defence budget to 2.5 per cent of GDP till 2030 ignoring the consequences of the pandemic. Lithuania also wants to switch to compulsory military service for both men and women.

But people do not need any of these, Lithuania is not going to fight anybody. Maybe if Lithuania was an independent state and had its own army it would be different.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative undermining the sovereignty of Lithuania and presenting it as a puppet of US and/or NATO. See related disinformation claims about the US presence in Europe.

Lithuania re-established its independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990. The process of restoring the Lithuanian military began the same year and in 2004 Lithuania joined the European Union and NATO. The modern Lithuanian military has 4 major defence units: land forces, air forces, navy forces, special forces.

The West is against Sputnik V because of competition

The negative reactions of certain Western countries against the Russian vaccine Sputnik V is a result of the competition that big pharmaceuticals companies cannot withstand from Russia in the fight against coronavirus.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the West and Sputnik V vaccine.

The claim on Western and more specifically EU officials are trying to discredit the Sputnik V vaccine is unfounded and presented without evidence.

Russophobic historical concepts, including so-called holodomor-genocide, have brought Ukraine to a civil war

History teaches that it teaches nothing. Russophobic historical concepts, including so-called famine-genocide, have already brought Ukraine to a civil war that has lasted almost seven years and claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people.

Disproof

Historical revisionism and a recurring pro Kremlin disinformation narrative about Holodomor, claiming that there was no artificially created famine in Ukraine and about the war in Ukraine, presenting the latter as a civil war.

The Holodomor was an artificial famine created with the aim of destroying the Ukrainian peasantry. The Soviet state took away livestock, crops and seeds from the peasants under the guise that the peasants "plundered" state property. The Soviet law on the seizure of food from peasants was adopted in 1932. The punitive document is known as the "Five Spikelet Law". Everyone who gathered several ears of wheat on the collective farm field was a culprit in the "theft of state property". If the law was not enforced, people were shot, including children. Convicts were not subject to amnesty. The famine of 1932-1933 claimed the lives of 7 to 10 million citizens of the Soviet Union; the disaster affected not only Ukraine but also parts of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Russia.
