DISINFO: Group of mad criminals seek to exploit COVID-19 to provoke social upheaval

A small but powerful group of mad criminals seek to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to provoke a monstrous and inhumane social upheaval and to promote their own economic and geopolitical interests.

Recurring pro-Kremlin narrative about global secret elites that are allegedly exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to advance their own economic and political interests. The article’s message is consistent with conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 pandemic that are often spread by pro-Kremlin outlets.

There is no evidence to support the article’s claim that a powerful secret group of criminals seeks to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to provoke a “monstrous social upheaval” and advance its economic and geopolitical interests.

Conspiracy theories claiming that the COVID-19 pandemic is being exploited (or has been created) by secret global élites have been spread by pro-Kremlin outlets since its beginning. Pro-Kremlin COVID-19-related disinformation messages have been regularly monitored by the European External Action Service.

COVID-19 conspiracy theories lead people to reject valid scientific information and basic prevention measures, contributing to the spread of the pandemic and complicating government efforts to cope with the COVID-19 crisis.

Despite claims by a number of pro-Kremlin outlets that the real threat is not COVID-19 but élite conspiracists seeking to exploit the pandemic, COVID-19 is a real problem of global proportions. COVID-19 is the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that emerged in December 2019. Severe COVID-19 can be fatal, and has caused millions of deaths around the world as well as lasting health problems in many who have survived the illness.
