DISINFO: Israel bombs civilians while Russia hits only military targets

SUMMARY

The Israelis are indiscriminately bombing Gaza, while Russia’s armed forces only hit military targets in Ukraine. Nobody has noticed the humanism of the Russian army, while they (the West) are praising Israel and claiming that it was attacked by terrorists and that it can raze everything in Gaza to the ground.

RESPONSE

This material may contain distressful/graphic content.

This is part of a recurring disinformation narrative attempting to whitewash Russia's war crimes and atrocities in Ukraine. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Hamas attack on Israel, killing hundreds of civilians on 7 October 2023.

There is ample evidence of the Russian armed forces’ committing war crimes such as bombing civilian objects, torturing Ukrainian soldiers and maltreating civilians. These cases have been registered both in liberated Ukrainian territories and those still under Russian occupation.

In a recent development, Russian troops killed at least 52 people in a missile strike on the village of Hroza in Kharkiv Oblast on 5 October 2023. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the strike “demonstrated the depths of depravity Russian forces are willing to sink to” and the White House said the attack was “horrifying”.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor-General's Office said on September 14 2023 that the International Criminal Court (ICC) had opened a field office in Kyiv as part of efforts to hold Russian forces accountable for potential war crimes committed during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Read similar disinformation cases claiming that War crimes accusations are Ukrainian propaganda against Russia, that SBU digs corpses up to stage provocations and accuse Russia of imaginary war crimes, and that EU sets up war tribunal to cover up its war crimes in Ukraine.
