Disinfo: Japan is a vassal state of the US and follows Washington’s policy instructions

Summary

President Putin recently made a special offer to Japan regarding the joint development of the Kuril Islands. But Japan is a vassal state of the US and follows Washington’s instructions, so it is improbable that Japanese politicians will act in the interests of their country and their people and accept President Putin’s offer.

Disproof

Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that seeks to portray Japan as a vassal. This message is consistent with the broader pro-Kremlin narrative claiming that US allies and partners are nations that have lost their sovereignty and have become US client states.

The article also contains a recurrent disinformation message about what Russia refers to as the "South Kuril Islands", and is also consistent with a broad propaganda narrative claiming that Moscow pursues a constructive foreign policy and always seeks to resolve conflicts, and to enhance peace, stability and international cooperation, while US and Western foreign policies are not constructive and seek confrontation.

It is not true that Japan is a “vassal of the US” that obeys US foreign policy instructions. The US-Japan security alliance is a key aspect of Japanese foreign policy, but Japan is a sovereign state and pursues an independent foreign policy, and Tokyo is often willing to disagree with US policy, especially towards East Asia. US military presence in Japan is regulated by the 1954 Mutual Defense Assistance Agreement.

Moreover, the article provides no evidence to support its claim that Putin’s offer to Japan regarding the joint development of the Kuril Islands is in the “interests of Japan and of its people”.

An implicit message of the article is that Putin’s offer could resolve the long-standing Russo-Japanese dispute. However, Russia has so far never considered Japan's request to regain possession of the islands invaded by the Soviet Union, an invasion that displaced thousands of Japanese.

The Kuril Islands were occupied by the Soviet Union following Japan's surrender in World War II. Previously, these islands were not Russian territory. In 1855 Russia and Japan had signed the Treaty of Shimoda, which divided the territory of the archipelago, assigning Japan's territorial rule to the four southern islands, while Russia got the northern territories.

As you can read in EU vs Disinfo database, Russia often uses the Kuril Islands issue to underline Japan's weakness and assert Moscow’s foreign policy in the Far East. These islands are rich in natural resources and supposedly also in rare earths. They are also an important gateway to the Pacific Ocean.

In 2005, the European Parliament issued an official statement urging the return of the territories in dispute to Japan. You can read more about the Kuril Islands issue here or here.

Read similar cases claiming that Japan is not fully sovereign, that Germany and Japan are occupied by the US, and that informed Japanese believe that the Kuril Islands are an integral part of Russia .

Disinfo: Western countries use accusations about Navalny to undermine political stability in Russia before elections

Western countries want to undermine internal political stability in Russia before the elections by making baseless accusations about citizen Alexei Navalny and other issues.

Disproof

This is part of a pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign on the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, aiming to deflect any responsibility of the Russian authorities for the incident. The claim was neither counterbalanced nor critically challenged in the article.

Contrary to the claim, Alexei Navalny’s poisoning with a chemical weapon is not a baseless accusation from the West, but a documented fact. There is unequivocal evidence proving that Navalny was poisoned in an assassination attempt, as established by initial clinical findings at the Charité hospital which indicated that he had been intoxicated with a substance from the group of cholinesterase inhibitors. Subsequent toxicological tests established the presence of a Novichok-type chemical nerve agent in Navalny's blood.

Disinfo: Group of mad criminals seek to exploit COVID-19 to provoke social upheaval

A small but powerful group of mad criminals seek to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to provoke a monstrous and inhumane social upheaval and to promote their own economic and geopolitical interests.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin narrative about global secret elites that are allegedly exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to advance their own economic and political interests. The article’s message is consistent with conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 pandemic that are often spread by pro-Kremlin outlets.

There is no evidence to support the article’s claim that a powerful secret group of criminals seeks to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to provoke a “monstrous social upheaval” and advance its economic and geopolitical interests.

Disinfo: US opposing Nord Stream 2 therefore supporting the 2014 Coup

(With former US President Donald Trump refusing the Nord Stream2 project)... emphasising again that his country is only concerned with its own interests, and that others should implement its plans and goals without regard to their higher national interests... The United States, therefore, supports the coup in Ukraine in 2014 and ignores the right of the Russian majority in Crimea to self-determination.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative trying to undermine the sovereignty of Ukraine, while painting the 2013-14 protests in Kyiv as a coup d'état.

The United States sees the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as a Russian geopolitical project intended to divide Europe and weaken European energy security. However, there is no basis for the claims that it supports the so-called “2014 Coup”, nor that it is ignoring the rights of the Ukrainian people. US State Secretary Antony J. Blinken affirmed that his country “stands firmly behind the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
