DISINFO: Kiev regime prepares "dirty bomb" provocation in Ukraine
SUMMARY
According to various sources, the Kyiv regime is at the final stage in the practical implementation of a plan to create a dirty bomb – a small-capacity nuclear weapon. The latter is happening under the guidance of the West in order to undermine Moscow's credibility.
RESPONSE
There is no evidence provided in order to back the claim that Ukraine is preparing to use WMDs. The article fits well in the popular pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about false flag operations and chemical attacks. Similar claims are utilised in a broader pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign accompanying the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, trying to shift the responsibility for the war’s atrocities to Ukraine.
A dirty bomb uses traditional explosives to spray radioactive material. Russia has not publicly offered evidence to back up the latter accusations and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has called the statements “lies.”
Ukraine, denying the Kremlin’s accusations, has invited the UN’s nuclear watchdog IAEA to reinitiate inspections in Ukraine as part of an “independent verification”, now connected to the dirty bomb allegations. On 3 November, IAEA’s chief Rafael Grossi stated that: “Based on the evaluation of the results available to date and the information provided by Ukraine, the agency did not find any indications of undeclared nuclear activities and materials at the locations”.
Furthermore, diplomats from France, Britain and the United States called Russia’s allegation a pretext that Moscow has fabricated to escalate the war. In the statement, the governments of US, France, and UK confirmed that their Defence Ministers had each spoken with the Russian Defence Minister, Sergei K. Shoigu, and rejected “Russia’s transparently false allegations” about a dirty bomb.
