Disinfo: Kyiv provokes Moldova to aggression against Transnistria

Summary

Kyiv provokes Moldova to aggression against Transnistria. Official Kyiv encourages the Moldovan authorities to take active steps to destabilise Transnistria.

Disproof

A recurring pro-Kremlin narrative about Ukraine as a source of tension in the region, combined with the narrative about current authorities of Moldova as supporters of a forceful solution of the conflict with Transnistria.

The claim is based on a post by an unknown author on the Telegram, which is not supported by any existing statement or document.

In her last interview, published on 22 January 2022, President of Moldova Maia Sandu said (timecode 10:50): "Of course, it is an important task for us to find a solution (on Transnistria). But this solution must be peaceful, diplomatic. It must be a solution that respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. And reintegration must result in a functional state. These three elements are extremely important”.

Vladimir Zelenskyy's last statement (timecode 06:00) on the Transnistrian settlement was made in January 2021, at a joint meeting with Maia Sandu. Back then, he emphasised that Ukraine's position on the Transnistrian settlement is unchanged.

Se here a similar case claiming that Maia Sandu is ready to attack Transnistria with the support of Ukraine and here a case on how Maia Sandu wants to arrange a second Karabakh in Transnistria.

Disinfo: No Russian military in the Donbas or in other parts of Ukraine

There are no Russian military forces either in the Donbas or in other parts of Ukraine, as they are located exclusively on Russian territory.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the war in Ukraine, falsely claiming that Russia is not involved in the conflict.

Even though a state of war between Russia and Ukraine has never officially been announced, there is irrefutable evidence of direct Russian military involvement in Eastern Ukraine since February 2014. The involvement of Russian personnel and equipment has been well documented for years and includes firing artillery over the border into Ukraine, the deployment of armoured vehicles and troops in contested provinces of Eastern Ukraine, the use of non-state actors such as Russian private military companies, and the launching of thousands of cyber attacks against Ukrainian targets.

Disinfo: NATO was created for confrontation, not defence

NATO is an organisation that was created for confrontation, not defence. And NATO is not a dove of peace, stability and prosperity. And this weapon of confrontation is moving closer and closer to Russian borders every day.

Moscow cannot put up with an invasion of the alliance into Ukraine. We are witnessing a gradual NATO invasion of the territory of Ukraine with its infrastructure, its instructors, stocks of defensive and offensive weapons, training of the Ukrainian military.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO.

NATO is a defensive alliance with primary aims to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its members. NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party.

Disinfo: At the time of Germany reunification US promised Gorbachev that NATO would not expand eastwards

At the time of Germany's reunification, the US promised Gorbachev that NATO would not expand eastwards.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO enlargement.

This claim has been debunked numerous times. NATO did not promise not to expand into eastern and central Europe back in 1990, which was confirmed by the former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev. Back in 2014, Gorbachev said “The topic of ‘NATO expansion was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility”.
