DISINFO: NATO is an aggressive bloc that considers Russia an enemy
SUMMARY
NATO considers Russia to be its adversary, so there is nothing wrong with giving up relations with the organisation.
No peace-loving statements, no camouflages of this aggressive orientation of NATO, they are not able to hide the true purpose of this Alliance. This is an aggressive bloc that considers Russia an enemy. And therefore, nothing terrible will happen if Russia, against the background of aggravation of aggressiveness, against the background of declarations that the main task is to contain Russia, we simply abandon these relations.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO, portraying it as an aggressive anti-Russian organisation.
NATO is a defensive alliance, whose primary aims are to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its members. Moreover, NATO poses no threat to Russia. During the Warsaw summit in July 2016, NATO has made it clear that "The Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia". This was also reaffirmed in the Brussels Summit Communiqué of 14 June 2021.
For more than two decades NATO has worked to build a partnership with Russia, including through the NATO-Russia Council (NRC). While NATO stands by its international commitments, Russia continues to breach the values, principles, trust, and commitments outlined in agreed documents that underpin the NATO-Russia relationship.
NATO-Russian cooperation has been suspended since 2014 in response to Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine. In response to Russia's aggressive actions, NATO suspended practical cooperation with Russia..
The NATO Summit Communiqué issued in Brussels in June 2021, clearly stated: "Until Russia demonstrates compliance with international law and its international obligations and responsibilities, there can be no return to “business as usual”. We will continue to respond to the deteriorating security environment by enhancing our deterrence and defence posture, including by a forward presence in the eastern part of the Alliance."
In October 2021, NATO withdrew the accreditation of eight members of the Russian Mission to NATO, who were undeclared Russian intelligence officers. This decision was based on intelligence. Russia responded by suspending its diplomatic mission to NATO.
