Disinfo: NATO’s eastward expansion is a serious security threat to Russia

Summary

Russia sees NATO's eastward expansion as a serious security threat. When Moscow launched a military offensive against Kyiv at the end of February, one of its main demands was that Ukraine formally declare itself a neutral country that would never join any Western military alliance.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO, portraying it as a belligerent organisation.

The claim about NATO "expansion" misrepresents the process of NATO enlargement. NATO does not "expand" but considers the applications of candidate countries that want to join. NATO is a defensive alliance with primary aims to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its members. NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's official policy is that "the Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia."

Ukraine is a sovereign country with its own national interests. It is not controlled by any Western government or organisation. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by almost the whole world with Russia as the key exception. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity have been violated by continuous acts of aggression by Russian armed forces since 2014 and culminated in an aggressive attack on a neighbouring country on February 24, 2022.

Disinfo: Embassies evacuate from Kyiv after the missile attack

Foreign embassies are already leaving Kyiv. By the way, this made Zelenskyy very sad because he needs a foreign audience like air. He began to beg Washington's and London's embassies to stay in the Ukrainian capital.

Disproof

No evidence given. Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine, suggesting that the country is abandoned by its partners.

No embassy left the Ukrainian capital after the brutal Russian missile attack on October 10. Foreign leaders and ambassadors expressed support to Ukraine, condemned Russia's attack, and pledged further support to Ukraine and its army.

Disinfo: The West ensured the adoption of the anti-Russian UN resolution by diplomatic terror and arm-twisting

The West was able to ensure the adoption of the anti-Russian resolution by the UNGA only by methods of diplomatic terror and arm-twisting.

The methods of diplomatic terror were used by the West, shamelessly, frankly arm-twisting, threatening developing countries with all sorts of punishments. Only such undisguised blackmail and threats managed to ensure the result.

Disproof

Recurring narrative on the West campaigning against Russia.

On 12 October, 2022, with 143 votes in favour, 5 against, the UN General Assembly adopts Resolution condemning Russian Federation’s annexation of four eastern Ukraine regions: Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia. It was the highest number of votes against Russia since the invasion.

Disinfo: Zelensky regime is building a dirty bomb

Recently, Ukrainian sources have reported that Zelensky's office is working on a dirty bomb, with the help of which it also hopes to take the conflict to a new level.

Disproof

Conspiracy theory. Recurring disinformation about the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing Ukraine of posing a nuclear threat to Russia.

There is no evidence that Ukraine is attempting to use nuclear materials in a war against Russia. It is unclear what sources the pro-Kremlin media refer to. Contrary to pro-Kremlin claims, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has mentioned that it is vital to stop Russia's nuclear threat and to withdraw its army from Ukraine.
