Disinfo: OPCW is controlled by Americans

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is controlled by the Americans.

Pro-Kremlin outlets began portraying the OPCW as a pawn in Western geopolitical designs around mid-2018, when the organisation was being granted new powers to assign blame for chemical attacks, especially in the Syrian Douma.

In a joint statement, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America called for an end to the unacceptable Russian defamation of the OPCW.

The OPCW conducts probes into allegations of chemical weapons' use in Syria, and its findings serve as the basis for publicly available reports and expert notes. The document by the Technical Secretariat offers a detailed response to notes verbales in which both Russia and Syria questioned the credibility and legality of the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission in Douma.

Cases in the EUvsDisinfo database focus on messages in the international information space that are identified as providing a partial, distorted, or false depiction of reality and spread key pro-Kremlin messages. This does not necessarily imply, however, that a given outlet is linked to the Kremlin or editorially pro-Kremlin, or that it has intentionally sought to disinform. EUvsDisinfo publications do not represent an official EU position, as the information and opinions expressed are based on media reporting and analysis of the East Stratcom Task Force.

Baltic states are under NATO occupation

Baltic states are under NATO occupation.

Recurring pro-Kremlin narrative claiming that the Baltic states are under the US and/or NATO control. This narrative aims at undermining the sovereignty of the Baltic States. A related recurring pro-Kremlin narrative claims that NATO is a tool used by the US to control the policies of European states.

Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia made a sovereign decision to become part of NATO, joining on the 29th of March 2004. NATO is a political and military alliance, and NATO member states make sovereign decisions about their own security. NATO and US military presence in these states is possible only on the basis of the clear consent of the hosting nation. NATO decisions are made by consensus, after discussion and consultation among member countries.

ECHR has become politicised

The European Court of Human Rights has become politicised. Certain clearly politicised cases are prioritised differently. A simple example is if someone from the Russian opposition is attacked by a policeman and filed an appeal to the European Court, this request will be considered much faster than if someone from a Russian village filed a request. Why? Because the European Court prioritises them.

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative denigrating the European Court of Human Rights.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is one of the Council of Europe’s institutions which safeguards human rights in Europe. As stated in the question and answer document on its website, in view of the current backlog of cases, applicants may have to wait a year before the Court can proceed with its initial examination of the application. Some applications may be treated as urgent and dealt with as a matter of priority, particularly where the applicant is said to be in imminent physical danger.

Deutsche Welle is up to its neck in the information war

Deutsche Welle is not tabloid journalism. However, they are still up to their necks in the information war. They are definitely not associates of objective journalism.

No evidence given to support the claims. Deutsche Welle is Germany’s international broadcaster. It is a public broadcaster and is financed by federal tax resources. It also runs the DW Akademie that plays a leading role in the development of free media systems, creating access to information, setting standards for education and independent journalism.

This message is also part of a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the spread of Russophobia in Western media, which also allegedly censors views critical of dominant Western narratives. You can find similar disinfo cases such as "Western journalism is dominated by Russophobia and prefers fantasy and storytelling to objective reporting" and "German media and NATO portray Russia as an enemy".
