Disinfo: PACE will be destroyed without Russia

Summary

If Russia does not return to PACE (the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe), Turkey and several other countries will leave after it. It will become a marginal club. This organisation will be destroyed without Russia and several other countries.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the Council of Europe, including its imminent collapse without Russia.

After the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia's voting rights in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) were suspended. However, they were recently restored.

The Bundestag suggested frightening Russia by introducing German police in the Donbas

Hände hoch! Bundestag deputies suggest sending German police to Donbas to scare Russia. An initiative called “The Peace in Ukraine Needs a New Impulse” suggests that this would act as deterrence against “Foreign Aggression”, i.e. Russia.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, portraying the West as an aggressor towards Russia. See similar cases here, here and here.

The Parliamentary faction of the Free Democratic Party of Germany, FDP, has issued a parliamentary initiative to intensify the efforts to bring peace to Eastern Ukraine. The FDP parliamentary initiative - link here - suggest strengthening existing missions in the area. Points three to five (see link) of the FDP initiative suggests the establishment of a UN Police Mission to support the existing OSCE and EU Missions in the region:

MEPs will observe elections in Abkhazia

MEPs will observe presidential elections in Abkhazia. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia, Irakli Tuzhba, noted that the Abkhaz delegation received this declaration from MEPs during his visit to Brussels in March 2019.

Disproof

The EU delegation in Georgia, when asked by Myth Detector about this issue, wrote in a letter that "the European Parliament or any of its official bodies (including the President, Committee on Foreign Affairs or Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) have not made and do not intend to make any pledge on monitoring the above mentioned <<elections>>”.

According to the letter, if individual MEPs decide to arrive in Abkhazia in July 2019 and/or make public comments on the ongoing developments there, it will be their personal decision, which does not reflect the position of the European Parliament or the European Union.

United States intends to maintain control over Ukraine

The United States intends to maintain control over Ukraine and is concerned about the unpredictability of Zelenskiy’s actions and his ability to start negotiations with Russia.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the statehood of Ukraine, portraying it as a failed state under foreign control.

Ukraine is a sovereign state. Neither the US, nor the EU control Ukraine. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by most of the free world, but were violated by Russia in 2014.
