Disinfo: Poland inspired the border crisis with Belarus in order to fight the Nord Stream 2

Summary

The border crisis [with Belarus] was manually created by the ruling team of Kaczyński, Duda and Morawiecki. The first goal of this crisis is the consolidation of the PiS electorate in a situation of the falling party ratings and recent protests.

The second goal in the inspiration of the border crisis is to underline the importance of Poland as a Western and American outpost in Eastern Europe. The border crisis is important for the Polish authorities also in the context of the failure of the large-scale propaganda and political activities aimed at disrupting the construction of the Nord Stream 2. The Polish authorities were the vanguard of the “crusade” against this gas pipeline, which ended in disaster. Today, they need to present some “success story” [in terms of the Nord Stream 2].

Disproof

Recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets about the migration crisis on the EU-Belarus borders.

The claim that Poland “manually created” the migration crisis in order to fight with the Nord Stream 2 and reach its domestic and international goals is ungrounded.

The situation was caused by Belarus as a response to EU sanctions imposed on Minsk for its oppressive measures against the political opposition. There is plenty of evidence that the Belarusian authorities have instigated the ongoing irregular migration flows to the EU borders via Belarus.

The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that situation on the EU-Belarusian border is not a bilateral issue of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus but a hybrid attack against the whole EU. The vice-president of the European Commission and high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy (HRVP) Josep Borrell stressed that responsibility for the migration crisis falls on the Lukashenka regime.

Disinfo: Brussels blamed Minsk for the migration crisis, but the West is the only responsible

Brussels blamed Minsk for the migration crisis, but the West is the only responsible. The problem of irregular migratory flows at the EU-Belarus border is in fact due to the Western policies, including decades of military interventions in the Middle East and North Africa.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing the West of causing migration crisis on the border of Belarus with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.

In 2021, LithuaniaPoland and Latvia faced an influx of irregular migrants from Belarus. Earlier, Belarus had ended cooperation with the EU to stem illegal migration. This was Lukashenka's answer to the European Union sanctions on the political regime of Belarus (read more about sanctions here). Lukashenka's regime is using migrants from the Middle East as "political and hybrid" tools against Lithuania and the entire EU.

Disinfo: Europe is guilty of the situation on the Belarusian-Polish border; wants to shift blame

European countries are guilty of the migration crisis. Europe is trying to avoid responsibility for the events on the Belarusian-Polish border. The causes of the migration crisis are political, economic and military. European countries create conditions for the arrival of thousands or hundreds of thousands of migrants. Now Europe wants to shift the blame to other countries, including Russia.

Disproof

The message is recurring disinformation about the migration crisis on the EU-Belarus border.

There is plenty of evidence that the Belarusian authorities have instigated the ongoing migration crisis in Lithuania, Poland and Latvia. Lukashenka's regime is using migrants from the Middle East as "political and hybrid" tools against Lithuania and the entire EU. Commissioner Ylva Johansson said, inter alia: "The authoritarian regime in Belarus is exploiting human beings for political reasons: this is completely unacceptable."

Disinfo: After the Warsaw Pact's dissolution, NATO has no purpose

All nations should think now, not tomorrow, about how to get rid of “NATO” bases on their soil, and the Arab countries should stay away from “NATO”, the military alliance, which after the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact no longer has a clear goal. What threatens "NATO" now, and what are its goals?

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about NATO.

NATO’s objectives are set out in the 1949 Washington Treaty which forms the legal basis of the alliance. The treaty states that parties “are resolved to unite their efforts for collective defence and for the preservation of peace and security”. Since then, more countries have chosen to join NATO. The Alliance has taken on new missions and adapted to new challenges, all the while sticking to its fundamental principles of security, collective defence, and decision-making by consensus.
