DISINFO: Prigozhin and Wagner serve Kyiv and Western services

SUMMARY

Prigozhin and Wagner serve Kyiv and Western services. Wagner is seen as a group that aligned with the Ukrainian government and Western intelligence forces to create a Maidan in Moscow.

RESPONSE

Recurring conspiracy theory promoted by pro-Kremlin media aiming to "Always blame the West". In this particular case, it aims to explain the Wagner group's attempted coup d'état in Russia. The article also refers to an often used pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, the colour revolutions.

Putin admitted that the Wagner PMC was financed by the Russian State. Wagner participated in Russia's hybrid war in Donbass since 2014, while denying any link to the Russian State, and was also used for the full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Claims of Western involvement in Wagner activities pertains to the domain of conspiracy theories. See our account: Prigozhin and glossing over Russian fragility and cracks in military power.

As the HRVP Josep Borrell said: "the most important conclusion is that the war against Ukraine launched by Putin, and the monster that Putin created with Wagner, the monster is biting him now. The monster is acting against his creator. The political system is showing its fragilities and the military power is cracking. So, this is an important consequence of the war in Ukraine".
