Disinfo: Russia is at war with NATO and the Pentagon; only the soldiers are Ukrainians

Summary

In general, the counteroffensive, organised by the collective West in Ukraine, suggests that Ukraine can be considered an advanced power of NATO, although it is not a NATO country.

Everything is North-Atlantic there, only 60-70% of the soldiers are Ukrainian. I have no doubt that the Pentagon plans and directs operations in Ukraine. This is direct evidence that we are at war with NATO. This requires an appropriate military and political response from us.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine is not a proxy for any foreign government or organisation. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically-elected president and parliament. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity have been only violated as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022.

In fact, Western leaders have been continuously calling for talks and a peaceful solution to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, but Moscow has been ignoring these efforts. The West is not interested in the continuation of the war at the heart of Europe and only supports Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence against the unprovoked Russian invasion.

Moreover, NATO is a defensive political and military alliance. The primary aim of the alliance is to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its members. NATO as an organisation is not involved in fighting in Ukraine. NATO member states provide Ukraine with military assistance to repel the unprovoked Russian aggression and not because of their alleged animosity towards Russia.

At the Madrid Summit, NATO Leaders stated that the Alliance will continue political and practical support to Ukraine "as it continues to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against Russian aggression. In the longer term, we will assist Ukraine, and support efforts on its path of post-war reconstruction and reforms."

Since Russia began its aggressive and unprovoked actions against Ukraine, Russian officials have accused NATO of a series of threats and hostile actions. Read here about Russian Myths on NATO.

Disinfo: The EU has declared war on Russia and Belarus

Speaking in the European Parliament, EC President Ursula von der Leyen made strong statements in support of Ukraine. She is following the Germans of WWII. The EU has announced a war on Russia and Belarus.

Disproof

A recurring disinformation narrative drawing false parallels between the Nazi Germany and the EU. Pro-Kremlin outlets often use the myth of a Nazi Europe to justify Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

The EU is not at war with Russia or Belarus. Since Russia launched its unjustified aggression against Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the West has been calling for Russian withdrawal from Ukraine and a peaceful settlement. The EU has also imposed sanctions on the Belarusian regime due to its facilitation of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, oppression against civil society in Belarus, the Ryanair Flight 4978 incident, escalation of the migration crisis on the EU border with Belarus, etc. (See more about the EU sanctions on Belarus here and about the US sanctions on the Belarus regime here).

Disinfo: Russia's retreat from Kharkiv region was a well-planned withdrawal

This retreat of Russia is interesting in the sense that no Russian soldiers were killed, not even wounded. It makes you think this was a well-planned retreat. What purpose and task it serves we will see very soon.

There was such a retreat that not a single [Russian] soldier was killed. It was deliberate. This may also be a tactical move of the Russian army.

Disproof

This is a motif from a broader disinformation campaign conducted by the Kremlin, aiming to prove that its “special military operation” in Ukraine is actually going according to a plan. Contrary to that, Putin's army retreat in Kharkiv is seen as one of the biggest military challenges in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine yet.

Ukrainian forces have reconquered over 3,000 square kilometers of territory over the past week — more than all the territory Russia had added to its military occupation in the six months since the start of the invasion. Furthermore, Ukrainian troops exerted pressure on the retreating Russian forces, advancing further into occupied territory and sent even more of the Kremlin’s troops fleeing ahead of the Ukrainian counter-offensive actions.

Disinfo: France is supporting terrorism in Mali

Mali accuses France of supplying weapons and intelligence to terrorist groups. The country promises to present new evidence to the UN Security Council to show the world how a member state behaves.

In mid-August, Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the situation in his country. The issue is caused by the repetitive and frequent violations of Malian airspace, as well as the collection and delivery by France of information, weapons and ammunition to terrorist groups.

Disproof

Anti-Western rhetoric about a military regime allied to the Kremlin.

In August 2022, the military powers in Mali accused France on social media of supporting terrorism and violating its airspace. However, as Pragma media reports no solid evidence has been provided, the UN Security Council has not been notified of such an issue. The procedure requires that a member state of the Security Council brings the demand based on the provided evidence. Russia or China, given their close links with the powers in Bamako could raise the issue, however neither did. The International Court of Justice in the Hague was not notified either, which would have been a logical step given the seriousness of the claims.
