Disinfo: Ryanair Flight 4978 incident was a UK's provocation

Summary

Brits organised a provocation in the Belarusian sky involving Raman Pratasevich. Thanks to the cooperation of Belarusian and Russian security services, the UK's hybrid operation failed. Pratasevich as a puppet went out of control and began to speak. He acknowledged the organisation of protests with money coming from Poland and the UK for these.

Disproof

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about western “colour revolution” attempts in Belarus.

There is no proof that the UK was anyhow involved in the Ryanair flight FR4987 incident. On 23 May 2021, the plane's crew en route from Athens to Vilnius was told by the Minsk Air Control about a bomb on board and demanded the flight redirected to Minsk. As the plane landed, a dissident journalist Raman Pratasevich wanted by the Belarusian authorities for “extremism” was detained. No bombs were found. In the afternoon of 24 May, Belarusian authorities claimed that the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas had organised the bomb threat, allegedly to force the EU to demand an Israeli cease-fire in Gaza. This came several days after a cease-fire had already been negotiated.

On 24 May 2021, in a declaration on behalf of the EU on the forced diversion of Ryanair flight FR4978 to Minsk on 23 May 2021, the High Representative called for the immediate release of detained journalist Mr Pratasevich. This was followed by a European Council statement, in which the EU leaders called for targeted individual and economic sanctions as well as a ban on flights over EU airspace by Belarusian airlines as well as preventing these flights from accessing airports in the EU airports. On 4 June 2021, the European Council introduced a ban on the overflight of EU airspace and on access to EU airports by Belarusian carriers of all kinds.

See earlier disinformation cases here and here alleging that the Ryanair flight incident could be UK's provocation, and claiming that Pratasevich is a "sacred sacrifice" in the US plan of the hostile takeover of Belarus.

Disinfo: The 2014 killings in Kyiv was a set-up by the protesters

It is a secret to no-one in Ukraine today, that snipers, apparently acting on orders by the leaders of the coup d’Etat, performed the killings at the Maidan in Kyiv in February 2014

Disproof

An unfounded claim, presented without a hint of evidence. Similar claims have been repeated frequently: examples here and here, in line with a recurrent narrative on “false flag operations”.

The Ukrainian judiciary has received criticism for the slow pace of investigating the violence, demanding the lives of around 100 protesters and 13 police officers. International media have shared highly critical remarks towards the Ukrainian authorities. This criticism does not support claims on the killings as a set-up.

Disinfo: EU showing its imperial desires by calling for an overthrow in Belarus

Commission President von der Leyen has promised Belarusian civil society three billion euros if it implements democratic reforms. You could also call it an open call for an overthrow. Von der Leyen's statement went uncommented on in the German media in its scandalous brazenness that breaks all transnational rules. This is an open expression of imperial desires and a desire to expand the sphere of influence.

Disproof

Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU and its members attempting to colonise other countries along with lost sovereignty and Belarus.

On 28 May 2021, the European Commission published its comprehensive plan of economic support for Belarus which is neither an "open call for overthrow", nor showing "open expressions for its imperial desires" as claimed in the article.

Disinfo: EU is imperialistic and a danger to peace and unity on the European continent

It may be that the precursors of the EU were peace projects. It may also be that the EU can become a peace project in the future. At present, it is not. On the contrary, the EU is a danger to peace and unity in Europe. The disadvantage is mainly its own, because the EU is neither trustworthy nor reliable. It is imperialistic and strives for sole power in Europe. It has become a danger to peace on the European continent.

Disproof

Narrative presenting the EU as an anti-peace-project, without providing evidence for the claims.

The article portrays the EU as a warmongering power, provoking conflicts and accused of inciting violence - without giving any evidence. There are no registered cases where the EU incited violence on the European continent or was responsible for the outbreak of violence. On the contrary, the European Union has become one of the world's most successful peace projects, being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012. Today the EU's ambition is to be, more than ever, a global actor for peace.
