Disinfo: Sanctions against Russia worsen the economic crisis in the West

Summary

The policy of threats and sanctions [against Russia] does not produce any results at all, but only exacerbates the economic and other crises in the West.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about sanctions. The claim was neither critically challenged nor counterbalanced in the article.

Although the claim speaks of the West in general, the vast majority of Western countries' trade with Russia happens with EU member states.

Since March 2014, the EU has progressively imposed restrictive measures against Russia. The measures were adopted in particular as response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and the deliberate destabilisation of Ukraine.

While these sanctions do affect the EU's economy, the EU-wide impact of the export losses are estimated at less than 0.2% of total value-added and employment. Research showed that already in 2016 most of the affected agricultural sectors had been able to find alternative markets, either within the EU or beyond.

See similar cases that it was the EU that suffered the most from anti-Russian sanctions; that the EU has lost hundreds of billions due to sanctions on Russia; that the EU is suffering from sanctions against Russia; that EU sanctions against Russia dealt a big blow to Europe itself; that the European economy is losing hundreds of billions due to sanctions, that sanctions cost Europe more than they cost Russia, and that the EU loses 450 billion euros yearly because of the sanctions against Russia.

Disinfo: NATO has double standards when it comes to Russia

NATO has double standards: the organisation asks to withdraw Russian forces from the border with Ukraine but ignores Russia's request to withdraw NATO forces deployed near the Russian border.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO.

This disinformation claim aims to create a false equivalence between NATO Enhanced forward presence on the territories of NATO allies, at the request of the host nations, and Russia's escalating military build-up along Ukrainian borders.

Disinfo: Kyiv is not fulfilling its commitments under the Minsk agreements

Kyiv is not fulfilling its commitments under the Minsk agreements and may have plans to resolve its internal conflict in the east by military means.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Ukraine is not willing to implement the Minsk agreements and that the conflict in Donbas is an internal conflict.

Ukraine has announced a truce several times since the war broke out in Donbas in 2014, and the illegal DNR and LNR pseudo-republics have been continually violating it. On top of that, separatists often use the civilian population as a human shield by shelling Ukrainian positions from residential areas to accuse Ukrainian troops of possible civilian victims when they strike back.

Disinfo: US Deep State drags the world to a war over Ukraine; NATO is criminal and terrorist organisation

Either Joe Biden manages to impose himself over the Deep State of the military-industrial complex, Big Tech and Big Pharma and de-escalates tensions in Ukraine, or these people, in their madness for losing their hegemony and for the survival of their political, social and economic model, will take Europe, and maybe the world, to war. NATO has become a criminal and terrorist organisation.

Disproof

This is a mix of several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about secret elites ruling the world above elected powers - mainly a so-called “Deep State” in the US - about Ukraine and about NATO. In this case, the purpose of these narratives, part of a wider disinformation campaign, is to deflect any Russian responsibility in the escalation of tensions on the Ukrainian border by blaming “dark powers” in the US and NATO for it.

Actually, these tensions are a result of Russia’s military buildup on the Ukrainian border since late October 2021. This includes the deployment of as many as 90,000 troops, as well as of certain specialised military units, electronic warfare systems and heavy-armoured vehicles. Despite Russian denials, this has been proven by satellite images and intelligence of the US, Ukraine and NATO, among other countries and institutions.
