Disinfo: Terrorists and White Helmets are preparing a chemical attack in Syria helped by the local media

Summary

Terrorists and White Helmets are preparing a chemical attack in Syria with the complicity of the local media. The chemical attack organised by the terrorists together with the White Helmets pseudo-humanitarian group will be filmed by the compliant local media to attack the Syrian government for using chemical agents against civilians.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation aiming to discredit the White Helmets, painting them as terrorists and shifting blame for chemical attacks in Syria away from Damascus.

The claim follows an established pattern of unsubstantiated accusations regarding the White Helmets' complicity in chemical attacks in Syria. Available evidence on such attacks has yet to link a single incident to any other party than the Assad regime.

The White Helmets are a staple topic of pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives and allegations of "staged" chemical attacks are part and parcel of the ongoing campaign by Syria and Russia to discredit the White Helmets by portraying them as terrorists linked to local terrorist movements and war criminals. Previous allegations about the White Helmets have never been supported by evidence and have been widely recognised as false, as can be read here and here.

Read similar cases claiming that Khan Shaikhun chemical attack staged by white helmets together with Al-Qaeda, that The white helmets and terrorists are preparing a chemical attack in Syria's Idlib, that white helmets terrorists plan chemical attacks to implicate Syrian army or that Terrorists "white helmets" are preparing a staged chemical attack.

Disinfo: Russia’s liberal and pro-Western opposition groups aim to destabilise Russia

Russia's liberal and pro-Western groups, such as those headed by Navalny, Roman Dobrokhotov and other radical anti-state figures, are the West's fifth column. They aim to destabilise Russia and provoke its collapse in the interest of the West. But the West’s real resource to influence Russian politics is the sixth column, which is composed of the Russian élite with the exception of the siloviki and of genuine and convinced patriots. The fifth column and the sixth column share the same values, objectives and curators.

Disproof

This article repeats a narrative about the West’s allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda against Russia, about its alleged plans to destabilise and encircle Russia, and about Western support for “colour revolutions”.

There is no evidence to support the article’s claim that Russian opposition movements and leaders, as well as significant sectors of the Russian élite, work for and are directed by Western governments, and are used by the latter to destabilise Russia.

Disinfo: Russia has destroyed its chemical arsenal… the US has not

Russia .. destroyed all its stockpiles of these (chemical) weapons, and this is documented by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Conversely, the United States is the only country in the world that has not done so and has not destroyed a large arsenal of chemical weapons.

Disproof

Recurrent pro-Kremlin narrative that Russia shut down all its chemical weapons programmes while trying to make it seem as if the US is not committed to destroying its own stockpile.

In September 2017, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) did in fact confirm the destruction of the 39,967 tonnes of chemical weapons possessed by Russia, but Novichoks were never declared to the OPCW and were not included in the Chemical Weapons Convention until 2019.

Disinfo: The accusations about Moscow violating the Budapest Memorandum are anti-Russian propaganda

Any accusations against Russia regarding the violation of its obligations under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on the security of Ukraine are groundless and represent anti-Russian propaganda.

In fact, when a coup d'etat took place in Ukraine, the entry of Crimea and Sevastopol into Russia became the only possible way for the population of the region to protect their interests.

Crimea became part of Russian region following a referendum in 2014, conducted in full compliance with the UN Charter and international law.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation aimed at justifying Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula in February 2014.

The mentioned Budapest Memorandum is a document signed in December 1994 by Ukraine, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. Under the Memorandum, Ukraine agreed to remove all Soviet-era nuclear weapons. In return, the US, the UK and Russia signed the Memorandum with guarantees of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. According to the document, all signatory countries have to respect Ukraine's sovereign rights for its territories.
