Disinfo: The Assange case represents Donald Trump’s capitulation to the Deep State

Summary

One thing we learned during Donald Trump’s presidency is that the Deep State is real: during the last three years we have seen it launching plot after plot to get the elections nullified, starting with the false “Intelligence Evaluation” of former CIA director John Brennan about Russia’s involvement in the elections in 2016. One of the things that candidate Trump did to become a target of the Deep State was to praise Wikileaks repeatedly. But then he was elected, and the real tragedy of Trump’s presidency is best represented by his 180-degree turn about Wikileaks and its founder Julian Assange, now facing a sentence of 175 years in prison. The same Deep State that Trump is serving by persecuting Assange is the same that is plotting his overthrow.

Disproof

This is a conspiracy theory with no evidence provided to support any of the multiple claims. It follows several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives, one denying any Russian interference in foreign elections (despite overwhelming evidence, both in the US and in other countries), and another about global elites secretly ruling the world, and specifically a so-called ‘Deep State’ in the United States that, among other things, aims to prevent US reconciliation with Russia.

You can find many examples of the first narrative in the EUvsDisinfo database, such as allegations that neither the US Intelligence Committee report nor the Mueller report found any evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 US elections, or that “absurd” accusations against Russia are an attempt to demonise it.

The second narrative aims to question the legitimacy of democracy and Western institutions, through examples such as unfounded stories about the “true rulers of the globe” like the "Skulls and Bones" fraternity to which all US presidents belong, a secret oligarch groups based in Switzerland, Jews and Masons, the Vatican, the Rothschild and Rockefeller families or billionaire George Soros, who allegedly uses the G7 as a facade and controls the world through mechanisms like manipulation of public opinion, thought control, climate change, immigration, and even the coronavirus outbreak.

No evidence after 2 years of the alleged poisoning of the Skripals

British authorities were unable to provide evidence confirming the charges against Russia, neither did they arrest the person who used the Novichok poison against a former Russian intelligence officer, Sergei Skripal.

Without verifying the information or the results of the investigations, the former Theresa May government rushed to accuse Moscow of being directly behind the alleged attack and thus targeting Britain’s security and stability.

Until now, the British authorities have not announced the results of the investigations that were aimed at Russia’s involvement on the basis of its use of the deadly Novichok chemicals used in the fabricated attack, nor did it arrest anyone involved in that attack, which led raise questions about the credibility of the British accusations and their political backgrounds.

London refused Russia’s participation, along with international and British investigators, in the attack’s investigations. Two years later, the Salisbury incident still raises many questions, about whether the alleged assault was really chemical. Where is the physical evidence that the British authorities claimed was in their possession to implicate Russia, where are Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, and why is the Russian embassy prevented from reaching them, especially as Yulia Skripal is still a Russian citizen.

Disproof

Recurring disinformation about the poisoning of the Skripals, attempting to divert attention from Russia's proven responsibility for the attack and resurfacing around the 2nd anniversary of this event.

The disinformation message implying a UK government conspiracy behind the Skripal case is an often-used method of applying a pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the Salisbury poisoning.

American intelligence has arbitrarily accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 US elections

American intelligence has arbitrarily accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 US election process and for nearly two years, allegations of attempts to influence American democracy have been investigated by US special prosecutor Robert Mueller, “to break down the conspiracy theory between the Russian authorities and the Republican President (Donald) Trump.” In the end, Mueller admitted that there was no conspiracy and found no evidence of it.

Disproof

A recurring narrative of denials which Moscow has issued regarding its involvement in the 2016 presidential election in the United States employing the long-established charge of Russophobia which the Kremlin uses to deflect criticism, however legitimate.

Before the Robert Mueller report was published, Russian meddling in the 2016 election had already been established by US intelligence agencies. Thus, the Special Investigation was primarily concerned with "whether any Americans […] joined the Russian conspiracies to influence the election" (p.2).
