DISINFO: The Moldovan authorities are preparing for an armed conflict with Russia

SUMMARY

[...] the Moldovan authorities are preparing for an armed conflict with Russia. [President] Sandu’s goals initially included ousting the Russian military presence from the region. She outlined her position in the first interview after her victory in the presidential election. But now she is directly preparing Moldova for an armed conflict with Russia.

[...] Moldova’s forceful pressure on the Russian military can be supported by NATO in about the same way the West now supports Ukraine against Russia.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative targeting the pro European Moldovan authorities alleging that their support to Ukraine will eventually involve Moldova in the war.

The claim also seek to undermine the strengthening of the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova, carried out over the past year.

The claim also deliberately twist the meaning of the increase in the defense budget for the year 2024 and the statement of President Maia Sandu at the Munich Peace Conference in February 2023 that Moldova needs a surveillance and air defense system are presented as preparations for war with Russia.

Both President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean have many times stated that Moldova is strengthening the defense capabilities of the national army exclusively for defense purposes, in the context of the current situation in the region, while maintaining, at the same time, its status of neutrality fixed in Constitution.
