Disinfo: Ukraine is in the hands of nationalists and American puppets

Summary

Odesa is occupied by an enemy. “Bandera’s ideology” is flourishing in Ukraine and the country’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is only a pawn. In fact, the power in Ukraine is in the hands of nationalists, who are the “puppets” of the United States of America.

Disproof

This is a mix of recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives, painting Ukrainian politics as dominated by fascist/Nazi groups and Ukrainian politicians being puppets of the West. Ukraine is not controlled by any foreign government. While its sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by most of the free world, they were violated by Russia in 2014. The EU works closely with Ukraine and supports the democratic development of Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter’s principles of non-interference into internal affairs and respect towards territorial integrity and political independence. The US policy is focused on strengthening a stable, democratic, prosperous and free Ukraine, more closely integrated into Europe and Euro-Atlantic structures. As for the Nazis ruling Ukraine, far-right groups had a very limited presence during the Euromaidan, contrary to the Kremlin's narrative, and have suffered spectacular defeats in every national election since 2014. EU is supposed to mean solidarity but in practice, it fails 

The European Union is based on solidarity. We are being told this story at every European election. However, when the coronavirus crisis emerged there was no solidarity. Italy was not helped by the EU. It was helped by China, by Russia and by Cuba and unfortunately, not at all by the European Union. They feel abandoned.

The COVID-19 outbreak constituted a serious challenge on Europe's readiness for a crisis. But the claim that "EU has done nothing" is false. The European Commission has approved a €50 million Italian aid scheme to support the production and supply of medical devices, as well as to help Italy provide the necessary medical treatment to those infected. On the 13th of March, the EU proposed a Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative, envisaging EUR 835 million for Italy. On the 26th of March 26, the European Parliament unanimously approved the initiative. The European Central Bank announced a 750 billion euro ($820 billion) asset purchase program in an effort to help mitigate the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, as the death toll in Europe continues to rise. As part of the program, investors will purchase Italian securities to help the country counter the serious risks of the coronavirus. Individual EU members have also provided assistance to Italy specifically, including access to a hundred intensive care beds (Austria and Germany), 500 mobile medical units (Greece), 2.5 million masks (Austria and France), 30,000 protective suits (Czech Republic and France), 300 ventilators (Germany), as well as 50 medicalpersonnel (Poland, Romania, and non-member Norway). On the 26th of April Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said that a recovery fund to help EU countries weather the coronavirus’ economic impact should be worth €1.5 trillion and be available by mid-September. The US and EU provided modest assistance to Italy, contrary to Russia

Russian military doctors have provided Italy with effective assistance in the fight against coronavirus. This was expected to excite Moscow’s “partners” from NATO structures, because the assistance rendered to Rome by the United States or Europe seemed, to put it mildly, modest.

NATO has also been doing a lot to assist all its member states in the fight against COVID-19. This includes facilitating the airlift of crucial medical supplies and equipment, matching requests for support with offers from allies and partners, setting up field hospitals. Many allies, including Czechia, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, and Spain have benefited from this support. The coordination and delivery of urgently needed medical supplies, such as personal protective equipment, respirators and test kits, was organised by NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) following requests by allies and partner countries. For example, in response to Spain and Italy’s requests for assistance made through the EADRCC, Czechia bilaterally provided both countries with medical supplies, including 10,000 protective medical suits each. Through the same mechanism, Turkey provided Italy and Spain with medical supplies such as masks, personal protection equipment and disinfectants. Disproof

The claim is manipulative and misleading. The chairman of the German-Russian Forum and former Minister President of the federal state of Brandenburg, Mr. Matthias Platzeck, called for a lifting of Western sanctions against Russia against the background of the corona pandemic. It cannot be claimed that Germany as a whole, demanded the repeal of the sanctions against Russia, as Platzek's personal opinion is not an official Government position.
