DISINFO: The Russophobia virus prevented Poland from receiving benefits from the Nord Stream 2

SUMMARY

Now, when it is known that Nord Stream 2 will be completed, everyone understood that the arguments of the opponents of this project were purely political, while the Germans and the Russians wanted pure economic profit. The German economy needs constant and uninterrupted supplies of cheaper Russian gas. At the same time, the Polish and the Baltic fight against the Nord Stream 2 was purely political, while the Ukrainians still do not know what they want.

The foolishness of the next generations of the post-Solidarity Polish politicians, infected with the “virus of Russophobia”, resulted in a situation that the Nord Stream 2 lies in the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea, but not on the Polish land (bringing income to Poland). Instead of receiving political and economic benefits from this project, we celebrate the next Polish hurt.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the Nord Stream 2 project, suggesting the idea that particular European countries (such as Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states) protest against it because of various subjective reasons (US influence, Russophobia, etc.).

The claim that the Nord Stream 2 is a purely economic project is a common pro-Kremlin message. This project is largely perceived as a Russian geopolitical weapon aimed against the EU energy security and the political solidarity of the European countries.

The claim that Poland does not participate in the Nord Stream 2 project because of the “Russophobia virus” is untrue. The Polish authorities have repeatedly stated that Nord Stream 2 is incongruent with the goals of the EU’s energy policy. In the opinion of Poland, the pipeline would lead to further monopolisation of the market rather than the diversification of gas supplies to Europe.

A number of EU states are concerned about the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project and its implications for their energy security. Back in March 2016, leaders of 8 Central and Eastern European states sent a letter to the president of the European Commission objecting to the Nord Stream 2 project because of risks for energy security in the region. This position was also shared by the European Parliament.
