DISINFO: The US has extended its influence in Russia and Former Warsaw Pact countries by orchestrating colour revolutions
SUMMARY
The US has extended its influence in Russia and Former Warsaw Pact countries by orchestrating colour revolutions. US-promoted colour revolutions are generously financed by the Open Society, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and other actors of so-called “global civil society” that Russia included in a black list and expelled from the country.
RESPONSE
Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that the US promotes and sponsors colour revolutions around the world and especially in post-Soviet countries and in Russia itself. The article also contains the pro-Kremlin narrative about the alleged role played in organising and/or financing colour revolutions by George Soros and his Open Society Foundations and by US foundations such as the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
Pro-Kremlin outlets have applied the colour revolution narrative to countries such as Ukraine, Belarus, Hong Kong, Catalonia, Arab countries, Georgia, as well as the protests in Russia.
This narrative claims that protests, disorders and civil uprisings are never manifestations of popular discontent but are colour revolutions directed and funded by Western governments, intelligence services or other Western actors in order to destabilise targeted foreign states and bring about regime change.
In reality, protests in the above-mentioned countries started by spontaneous and often peaceful demonstrations, sparked by events that shook a nation’s popular consciousness. There is no evidence that Western governmental or non-governmental actors orchestrated any of these popular revolts.
There is also no evidence that George Soros, his Open Society Foundations or US foundations such as the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) had any role in organising or financing these coloured revolutions.
George Soros is often targeted by the pro-Kremlin media with multiple conspiracy theories and disinformation, claiming without evidence that he is involved in destabilising governments around the world.
The Open Society Foundations was founded in the late 1980s and unites the largest network of private and independent groups working on issues of democracy, human rights and social innovation. The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is an independent, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world.
Read similar cases claiming that the US overthrew legitimate government in Ukraine; wants the same for Russia, China and Hungary, that Catalan protests are staged by the US and Soros to punish Spain for its relations with Cuba, and that a colour revolution is the best way for a country to lose part of its territory.
