Disinfo: The US is escalating Ukrainian civil war

Summary

US support for the current Kiev regime does not make Europe or Ukraine united or free, in fact, the US simply takes sides in the Ukrainian civil war, and of course, the confrontation will continue in the future. By backing one Ukrainian group against another, the US authorities are escalating the civil conflict in Ukraine.

Disproof

The disinformation claim above is part of a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the war in Ukraine, aimed at obfuscating the Kremlin's involvement.

The Donbas war is not an internal conflict between Ukrainians but a well-documented act of aggression by Russian armed forces, ongoing since February 2014. Accordingly, US support to Ukraine is aimed at confronting Russia's repeated violation of Ukrainian territorial integrity.

There is irrefutable evidence of direct Russian military involvement in Eastern Ukraine. Russia is supporting its proxies (the so-called People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk) with weapons, its active-duty soldiers serve there and its top military commanders visit the war zone to coordinate joint efforts with the separatists.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that Moscow will continue to support these territories. The systematic issuing of Russian passports to several hundred of thousands of persons in the two entities is now also used as a pretext to claim the right to influence and perhaps intervene militarily. Russia is also reported to be using the occupied territories as a testing ground for new weapons. Despite all this Russia officially denies its military presence in Donbas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted Russia's military presence in Ukraine in 2015.

Denying Russia's involvement in the Donbas War is a frequent element of pro-Kremlin disinformation. Disinfo: The Memorial systematically violated Russian law, discrediting the USSR and Russia

The [NGO} Memorial systematically violated Russian law. There is no doubt in the legality of the Russian court judgment on this organisation. Any self-respecting state, including Poland, would have banned this organisation long ago. The decision of the Russian court is not political but purely judicial. The activists of the Memorial (there are practically no historians among them) focused only on discrediting the Soviet history and contemporary policy of Russia, diminishing the heroism of Soviet soldiers. Any normal country would have reacted to the actions similar to activities of the Memorial.

Disproof

Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about alleged foreign interference in Russian politics through NGOs and human rights organisations. The claim that the Memorial somehow violated Russian law or discredited Soviet and Russian history is ungrounded.

The Memorial is the oldest Russian human rights group focused on documenting the crimes against humanity committed by the Soviet authorities. This organisation has studied political repressions in the USSR and in present-day Russia and promoted the moral and legal rehabilitation of persons subjected to political repressions.

Disinfo: Russia should negotiate only with Washington because 90 per cent of NATO is the US

For Russia, it would be more convenient to talk about security guarantees in Europe with the US instead of NATO. The reason is that 90 per cent of NATO is the US and it would be easier to understand each other in a bilateral format. There is no point in a dialogue with 30 countries, almost all of them extremely negative towards Russia and even some of them, like the Baltic nations and Poland, expecting a war with Russia.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative against NATO, aiming to push for internal divisions in the Atlantic Alliance.

The claim that “90 per cent of NATO is the US” is patently false: although the US is the country with the highest military expenditure of the Atlantic Alliance, it covers for only 16 per cent of NATO’s running costs, the same figure as Germany and not too far from UK’s 11 per cent and France’s 10,5 per cent, according to NATO’s formula to calculate these costs.
