Disinfo: The US is ready to help return Crimea to Ukraine or turn it into a nuclear desert

Summary

The Americans are preparing, if not to return the Crimea to Ukraine, then to at least turn it into a nuclear desert.

Disproof

Conspiracy theory with no evidence given. Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative of Ukraine being a puppet of the US mixed with the narrative about Ukraine and Crimea.

The pro-Kremlin disinformation alleges that the flight over the Ukrainian territory of two US strategic bombers is a pretext to the seizure of Crimea by force.

In fact, Air Force Command of Ukrainian Air Force informed that on May 29, four Ukrainian fighter jets accompanied the strategic bombers of the US Air Force during their flight over the territory of Ukraine. This was a planned event to achieve interoperability between NATO and its key partners. Before entering Ukrainian air space, the US bombers were accompanied by the Polish jets.

Ukraine is a sovereign state. The US does not control Ukraine. Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected by most of the free world, confirmed by the resolutions of the United Nations, but violated by Russia.

Crimea was illegally annexed by Moscow based on an illegitimate referendum. On 27 March 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in which it stated that the referendum in Crimea was not valid and could not serve as a basis for any change in the status of the peninsula. On 9 December 2019, the UN General Assembly confirmed its non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea.

The protests in the US are reminiscent of colour revolution technique

The situation [with the protests] is complicated: a harsh crackdown on the protests will lead to a fall in ratings (including among African Americans, whose votes will be key in the forthcoming elections), but continued unrest will shake the confidence of Trump’s nuclear electorate.

The protests are being supported by opponents of Trump, led by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, albeit with reservations. It seems that, alongside the coronavirus, they will become a central theme of the election race. Whatever happens, developments in the country are extremely reminiscent of the techniques of a colour revolution.

Disproof

An unfounded conspiracy theory, in line with a pro-Kremlin narrative on protests never actually being manifestations of popular discontent.

The  pro-Kremlin media frequently use disinformation narratives about popular protests allegedly incited by the US around the world, including colour revolutions in Eastern Europe, Euromaidan in Ukraine,  protests in Catalonia and others.

Radio Liberty and VOA are a part of American propaganda machine and are banned in the US

There are channels recognised as propaganda. Radio Liberty, Voice of America – they are banned from broadcasting in the USA. They are not media. Every bastard who sat on Radio Liberty and Voice of America – they generally do not have the right to call themselves journalists. They generally have nothing to do with the media. They are the wheel and cog of the American propaganda machine, which is even forbidden to broadcast on the territory of the United States. It is forbidden.

Disproof

No evidence is provided to support the accusation that VOA and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty spread propaganda, nor that they are banned from broadcasting in the USA. Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative aimed at discrediting Western media and journalists.

RFE/RL and VOA are a part of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). The U.S. Agency for Global Media and the media organisations that it supports can make their content available in broadcast quality upon request within the United States. This is due to a law that went into effect on July 2, 2013, amending the U.S. Information and Educational Exchange Act of 1948, known as the Smith-Mundt Act.

Russia never intervened in American affairs

Russia has never interfered in American affairs and has no intention of doing so.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative denying Moscow's interference in the 2016 US presidential elections.

Electoral interference by Russia has been extensively documented in numerous countries around the world. The independent research, media investigations and parliamentary inquiries point out to evidence linking Russian state actors with interference in various electoral processes, including the 2016 US presidential elections, Brexit vote, in the 2017 French Presidential elections, in the 2017 German Parliamentary elections, etc. The list of essential research and analysis about the Kremlin's election meddling effort can be found here (Electoral interference).
