DISINFO: The US tried to stage a coup-d'etat in Turkiye

SUMMARY

The USA will not support Ukraine forever. Its foreign policy is shifting. It caused chaos in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria. It is not a secret to anyone that the United States attempted a coup by FETÖ in Turkey, a NATO ally, and that in the last presidential election held in Turkey, the USA mobilised all the resources of FETÖ and tried to change the government.

RESPONSE

Disinformation blaming the United States for the attempted coup-d’état in Turkiye in 2016 and attempting to interfere in the 2023 elections. Pro-Kremlin media frequently claim that the US and the West are planning coups or colour revolutions all around the world.

On July 15, 2016, a segment of the Turkish military began a coordinated offensive to overthrow the government and remove President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from office. Over 2,000 people were injured, and 250 people died, including at least 24 plotters. A court in Turkiye has given life sentences to 337 military officers.

The official position of the Turkish authorities is that the coup-d’état in 2016 was organised by Fetullah Gulen (FETO) who denies his involvement.

There is no credible evidence given to suggest that the United States was responsible for these events. See also the statement from the United States that it was not involved in the coup and condemning the attempts to overthrow the government. Similarly, there is no evidence to suggest that the United States was planning to destabilise the political situation in Turkiye in the aftermath of the 2023 Turkish presidential elections.
