Disinfo: The West did not respond to Russian initiatives to cooperate on the Navalny case

Summary

Russia is ready to open an investigation into the case of Navalny, but it asked the West to provide it with official conclusions about the issue. Moscow has suggested to foreign partners to cooperate in the investigation on its territory and abroad, but these initiatives have not received any response.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Aleksei Navalny's poisoning.

Germany has responded to past Russian calls for Navalny's medical samples by saying that Russia should already have all it needs after its initial treatment of the dissident.

The German Federal government said that toxicological tests provided “unequivocal evidence of a chemical nerve agent of the Novichok group” in the blood samples of Alexei Navalny.

In addition, on 14 September, the German government provided research by two more independent laboratories in France and Sweden, which confirmed the presence of poison from the Novichok group in the body of politician Alexei Navalny.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Germany informed the Russian ambassador to Germany, the EU and NATO, on the results of the investigation. Germany also informed Russia via diplomatic channels on the progress of the investigation.

Arne Collatz, a spokesman for Germany’s Defence Ministry said the data had been provided to the Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

“This international organization, of which Russia is also a member, has a treaty-based mandate to oversee and enforce the ban on the use, production, storage as well as research into chemical weapons.”

The OPCW report, published 8 October, also supports the German conclusions. The OPCW report can be found here.

Furthermore, on September 11, Berlin’s Justice Ministry approved a request from Moscow for legal assistance in the investigation and information on Navalny’s state of health, “subject to his consent.

The European Union condemned the poisoning of Alexei Navalny in the strongest possible terms.

Read similar disinformation messages alleging that the West has an interest in the death of Navalny, that only traces of alcohol and caffeine were found in Navalny's blood, that the West will falsely accuse Russia of poisoning Navalny, as with Skripal and Litvinenko.

Washington implemented new anti-Russian sanctions and pushed relations with Moscow into deeper crisis

The US Department of Commerce announced the list of 103 Chinese and Russian companies linked to the military. Export restrictions will be implemented for these companies.

<…>

Washington is ignoring its own business interests with anti-Russian fervor. The US cancels the possibility of cooperating with Russia in very promising area, including civil aviation, engineering, manufacturing of devices, metal industry.

This step pushes relations between Russia and the US into a deeper crisis. It will only be possible to exit this crisis if the US is ready to develop relations on the principles of equality and mutual respect.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the anti-Russian position of the US. New restrictions on Russian companies (as well as on Chinese) are aimed:

“to combat efforts by China and Russia to divert U.S. technology for their destabilising military programs”.

The current crisis in relations between Russia and the US is linked to Moscow's modus operandi, including oppression against its own civil society, aggression against its neighbours, attacks on democratic institutions etc. The official position of the US Department of State in the context of relations with Russia is:

“The United States would like to move beyond the current low level of trust with Russia, stabilize our relationship, and cooperate where possible and when it is in the core U.S. national security interest to do so. To achieve this, Russia must take demonstrable steps to show it is willing to be a responsible global actor, starting with a cessation of efforts to interfere in democratic processes. The long-term goal of the United States is to see Russia become a constructive stakeholder in the global community”.

Pro-Kremlin disinformation often tries to present the sanctions on Russia as Russophobic or not in the interest of the countries imposing them. See similar examples: US sanctions policy is ineffective; American sanctions aim to destroy the Russian economy; US sanctions against Ramzan Kadyrov are part of Washington’s Russophobic strategy.

OPCW is a hostage of Western geopolitical interests

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has been a hostage of Western geopolitical interests in the case of the alleged poisoning of Alexei Navalny. Russia has requested its assistance but has not received any response for the last two months.

Disproof

This is a recurring disinformation narrative attacking the independence and integrity of the OPCW and a disinformation narrative about the Navalny poisoning.

Clinical findings at the Charité hospital where the Russian opposition leader was transferred after he was poisoned in Omsk indicated that Navalny was poisoned with a chemical nerve agent of the Novichok group.

US will interfere in 2021 Russian Duma elections

The United States will intervene in the 2021 Russian legislative elections for the State Duma in 2021, as it has always done in past Russian elections.

Disproof

Disinformation about alleged Western efforts to interfere in the domestic elections of Russia.

This narrative is aimed at discrediting reports and statements according to which Russia meddles in the election processes of European countries and the US by launching a counter-narrative.
