DISINFO: The West is losing patience with Ukraine's provocations and refusal to negotiate with Russia
SUMMARY
Kyiv's insistence on refusing to negotiate with Moscow has already exhausted the West's patience. A sharp shift in the rhetoric of Washington and major European countries towards Russia is observed after the missile attack incident in Poland - the West has taken the initiative to convince the Baltic states as soon as possible that Ukraine, not Russia, fired the missile that hit Poland, while at the same time Zelenskyy denies the facts.
RESPONSE
The article utilises a mix of the popular pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that Ukraine is abandoned by the West and the unfounded statement that Ukraine tries to provoke a direct clash between Russia and NATO in connection with the recent missile incident in Poland.
There has been no major shift in rhetoric from the West towards the Kremlin’s aggressive action. In fact, the contrary was observed. On November 23, in an unprecedented action undertaken by the European Parliament, EU lawmakers declared Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. Parliaments in several of Ukraine's most ardent EU backers including Poland have declared that they agree with the EP's designation of Russia under Putin's rule.
During the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on 21 November, NATO lawmakers stated that NATO Allies must stand firm against Russian aggression and step-up support to Ukraine. Just minutes later, the Assembly passed a series of resolutions calling on the 30 NATO Allies to intensify backing for Ukraine’s resistance.
Furthermore, right after the missile incident, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy J. Borrell confirmed that the EU expresses its unwavering unity & solidarity with the Polish people and will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.
Claims about Ukraine's imminent collapse and disintegration have been prominent in the pro-Kremlin media since 2014. The West is not abandoning Ukraine – solid proof is that no embassy left the Ukrainian capital after the Russian missile attack on October 10. Foreign leaders and ambassadors expressed support to Ukraine, condemned Russia's attack, and pledged further support to Ukraine and its army.
On 16 November 2022, Polish authorities and the Associated Press (AP) stated that a Russian-made missile fell in the east of the country, killing two people. Three U.S. officials said preliminary assessments suggested the missile was fired by Ukrainian forces at an incoming Russian one amid the crushing salvo against Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
There is no evidence that Ukraine is deliberately provoking NATO to invoke article 5 against Russia. In fact, Russia blames Ukraine and the West for its own invasion of Ukraine that started on 24 February 2022. Pro-Kremlin media has previously called internationally investigated war crimes of Russia, “provocations” including ones conducted by the ICC.
