DISINFO: Ukraine is abandoned, it is a third-rate colony

SUMMARY

The "Kyiv strategists" did not achieve the cherished result, they, on the contrary, destroyed the national economy, agriculture and put the country into openly enslaving conditions. Ukraine is not expected either in NATO or in the European Union. It is assigned the role of a third-rate colony.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukraine as a failed, abandoned state, which is consistent with pro-Kremlin narratives alleging that Ukraine is a degrading state.

Ukraine is not a colony neither of the EU or NATO. Ukraine, as an independent country, has a functioning government and economy, it is a member of many international organisations, such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and a party to international agreements. Ukraine has bilateral diplomatic relations with the majority of countries.

Ukraine is a strategic partner for NATO in many areas. Since the 1990s, relations between NATO and Ukraine have developed into one of NATO’s most influential partnerships. Relations were strengthened with the signing of the 1997 Charter on a Distinctive Partnership, which established the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC).

Ukraine is a priority partner for the European Union (EU). The EU supports Ukraine in ensuring a stable, prosperous, and democratic future for its citizens and is unwavering in its support for Ukraine’s independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. The Association Agreement (AA), including its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) signed in 2014, is the main tool for bringing Ukraine and the EU closer together, promoting deeper political ties, stronger economic links, and respect for common values.

The Ukrainian economy has been affected by the recession of the 1990s, the world economic and financial crisis in 2008-2009, and the crisis provoked by the Russian military intervention in Ukraine that started in 2014.

In 2015, Ukraine's economy started to recover. Ukraine has improved its industry and agriculture, Ukraine opened new export markets in Europe, Asia, and Africa, it has signed free trade agreements with the EU and Canada, and is negotiating agreements with Turkey and Israel. Ukraine's GDP per person has been improving steadily since 2015 and as of 2018-2019 was the largest in Ukrainian history.

See similar disinformation cases in our database: Ukraine will never be admitted to NATO; since the coup, Ukraine became a failed American colony; modern Ukraine was created as a country for death in the name of American interests; the coup of 2014 and the resulting suspension of relations with Russia has halted Ukrainian development.
