DISINFO: Ukraine may stage deadly provocations in order to launch attack on Crimea

SUMMARY

Ukraine may stage provocations with the permission of the United States involving the death of Ukrainian soldiers in order to launch a military campaign for the return of Crimea. Kyiv has been recently making more and more statements about the restoration of control over Crimea by force. While trying to please the new US administration, Ukraine is ready to plunge itself into a military adventure, despite the worsening economic situation.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the illegal annexation of Crimea and Ukraine.

Such messages have increasingly appeared in the pro-Kremlin media since February 2021, when Russia started a military buildup along Ukraine's borders which accelerated in March and April. Significant, additional Russian heavy equipment and armament have remained in the border regions and on occupied Crimea; - all contributing to heightened tension.

Ukrainian authorities have never indicated an intention to free Crimea from illegal Russian annexation by force. Kyiv has announced its plan for the peaceful de-occupation of Crimea, one of its vehicles being the Crimea Platform.

Such messages have increasingly appeared in the pro-Kremlin media since February 2021, when Russia started its military buildup along Ukraine's borders.

The foreign ministers of the G7 countries, including the High Representative/Vice-President of the EU Josep Borrell called on Russia to cease its provocations and to immediately de-escalate tensions in line with its international obligations.
