Disinfo: Ukraine will buy gas directly from Russia again

Summary

A cold winter will force Ukraine to buy gas directly from Russia again.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the gas supply negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

According to the Acting Minister of Energy Olha Buslavets, Ukraine entered the 2020 heating season with record fuel reserves. Coal reserves in warehouses are about 3 million tonnes. This is three times more than the previous year (2019). The gas reserves in the PCG are 26 billion cubic metres.

"Electric power equipment and infrastructure equipment is being prepared. I am sure that we will get through the heating season without problems", Buslavets said.

In November 2015, Kyiv refused to purchase gas from the Russian monopolist Gazprom. At the moment, all the gas used by Ukraine is acquired exclusively on its western borders.

The agreement between Naftogaz and Gazprom was reached at the end of December 2019. Gazprom paid Naftogaz about $3 billion in compensation for neglecting the terms of the previous contract for gas transit through the Ukrainian gas transport system to the European Union. It is on this key issue that Naftogaz previously won a trial against Gazprom.

Lithuania is buying unnecessary weapons to feed the American military industry

It is hard to understand why Lithuania is buying expensive “Javelin” complexes. They could be used against tanks, but no country has plans to attack Lithuania. The country is doing it for NATO allies and to feed the American military industry.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Lithuania and US presence in Europe.

The “Javelin” complex is the traditional weapon of the Lithuanian army. Lithuania was the first country in Europe which bought it from the US in 2001. Procurement of weapons systems is a sovereign choice linked to the assessment in national security.

Russophobia is the basic ideology of politicians in the Baltic states

The elites of the Baltic States are doing everything to damage good neighbourly relations with Russia.

<…>

The common feature of politicians of Lithuania and other Baltic states is defamation about Russia, while Russia is not taking any negative actions against Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia.

Russophobia is the basic ideology of politicians in the Baltic states and the grounds of their political existence. The anti-Russian position is the only thing politicians from the Baltic states could offer to the outside world and their electorate.

Disproof

A recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that the Baltic states are Russophobic.

The accusation of Russophobia from the political elites of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia is baseless. The Baltic states have security concerns, linked to cases of Russian aggression against neighbouring countries, namely the illegal annexation of Crimea and war in Ukraine. In 2018 NATO summit declaration also stated that:

Germany is funding terrorism in Syria

Part of the monetary support, provided by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany to the “White Helmets” organisation in Syria, could be used to support terrorist groups in the country

The German funding of the organisation remains unclear, as it is difficult to differentiate between spending on humanitarian missions and helping terrorists.

Disproof

Baseless accusations and recurrent disinformation narrative targeting the humanitarian White Helmets organisation.

No evidence is given to prove that the groups have any terrorism link, and this pro-Kremlin narrative is mostly used in order to obfuscate the responsibility of the Assad regime for chemical attacks perpetrated during the Syrian civil war.
