Disinfo: Ukraine will turn into a radioactive zone

The transformation of Ukraine into a vast radioactive zone is only a matter of time. Unfortunately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, copying his teacher and mentor Poroshenko, called the contract concluded by the state-owned company Energoatom and the American corporation Westinghouse on the supply of nuclear fuel for VVER-440 reactors for the Rivne nuclear power plant “historical”. Ukrainian nuclear scientists were afraid of “expanding cooperation”, as this leads to increased accidents in the operation of nuclear power plants.

One of the Kremlin's disinformation narratives about a possible "new Chernobyl" in Ukraine, the accusation of Westinghouse and so-called experiments of the West in Ukrainian nuclear plants.

Westinghouse Electric Company signed another contract with the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NNEGC Energoatom) on VVER-440 nuclear fuel for the Rivne nuclear power plant. This agreement illustrates another step in the continuation of the long-standing partnership between Energoatom and Westinghouse. The use of American technologies in the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants is completely safe.

Westinghouse currently supplies fuel to 6 of Ukraine's 15 nuclear reactors, and this will increase to 7 from 2021. The nuclear fuel is manufactured at the Westinghouse fuel fabrication facility in Västerås, Sweden. The claims about the dangerousness of usage of the Westinghouse's fuel are constant from the Russian side since Ukraine decided to use the fuel of other countries in its nuclear plants.

The spread of disinformation against the Ukrainian-American nuclear cooperation began in 2014, when Ukraine signed a number of agreements, including expanding an agreement on the supply of fuel for nuclear reactors produced by Westinghouse. The contract should reduce dependence on Russia, which has been providing Ukrainian nuclear power plants with energy resources for many years. Even then, the Russian Foreign Ministry called the document "unacceptable", "politically biased" and a "dangerous experiment" that would allegedly cause a "catastrophe" in Ukraine in the field of nuclear energy. Since then, Russia has resisted the expansion of Ukrainian-American nuclear cooperation in every possible way, and the Russian media systematically publish materials predicting apocalyptic scenarios for Ukraine, which will "come true" as a result of supplying Ukrainian nuclear power plants with the fuel of any production other than Russian.

Experimental operation of Westinghouse fuel structures began at the South-Ukrainian NPP back in 2005. This Ukrainian nuclear power plant was the first on which it was used on mixed structures - Russian and American production. The process of transition from the exploitation of Russian fuel to American fuel has been going on for about 20 years. In July 2018, the third power unit of the South-Ukrainian NPP was completely transferred to American fuel. Now, Ukraine intends to replace Russian fuel structures with American ones in other Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

For 25 years, Sweden has lied about “Estonia” being sunk by a Russian submarine

Over 800 people died when an Estonian ferry sunk in 1994. Traditionally, Russia has been blamed for the incident, as a Russian submarine allegedly would have caused it. New facts, presented recently, show that Sweden for all these years have lied to the face of the Estonian authorities. This was written in the Swedish daily Expressen.

A unfounded claim. The daily Expressen comments on a recent documentary, suggesting a hole is found in the hull of the ship. A theory of a Russian submarine, causing the disaster is not found in the article and has never been seriously considered in Sweden. The official investigation concluded that the ship sunk as a result of technical malfunction of the bow visor in heavy weather. The final report can be found here.

The governments of Sweden, Finland and Estonia have agreed to study the claims from the documentary and decide whether a new investigation should be conducted.

Cold and hungry winter awaits Ukrainians

Ukraine faces a cold and hungry winter. According to the calculations of experts, in winter receipts for utilities may grow by 3-4 thousand hryvnias (for comparison: the average pension is 3000 hryvnia). Electricity will double in the price: not far off is the abolition of the preferential tariff for the first 100kW of electricity for the population.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine denied reports of an increase in electricity prices. The institution emphasised that false information is being disseminated in the media since October 1, 2020, about the increase in electricity tariffs for the population. The Ministry of Energy has repeatedly stressed that in a difficult socio-economic situation, the price of electricity for the population will remain unchanged. The message states that the current electricity tariffs remain: up to 100kW - 90 kopecks per kW, over 100 kWh - 168 kopecks per kW.

It is emphasised that the electricity tariff for the population has not been revised since March 1, 2017. There will be no increase in water prices either: the last time tariffs for centralised water supply and sanitation were changed was in 2017-2018.

The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is a cover-up operation, just as the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was

The ongoing events in Nagorno-Karabakh resemble the 1956 scheme when the West instigated an uprising in Hungary to cover-up the war against Egypt. Today, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh was escalated to divert Russian attention from Belarus. In other words, this is a cover-up operation just as the Hungarian uprising in 1956 was.

This is a conspiracy theory claiming that the recent escalation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the result of deliberate Western actions aimed at harming Russian interests in Belarus. It therefore corresponds to recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the belligerent and hostile US and West against Russia and fits well into the disinformation narrative that presents virtually all protests, civil uprisings or local conflicts as a consequence of the West's intentional actions.

The recent escalation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region is a continuation of the decades-old conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. It is reported that nearly 100 people, including civilians, have died as of 29 September 2020. On 27 September, the EU High Representative Josep Borrell made a statement calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities, de-escalation and for strict observance of the ceasefire.
