At the time of the tragedy, two Ukrainian ships were in the port near the epicentre of the explosion - RAUF and Mero Star. Although both ships were near the explosion and both of them are believed to be destroyed, none of them were carrying explosive material, as confirmed by TankerTrackers.com. The two ships were most likely carrying grain.
Instead of Metro Star, the massive amount of ammonium nitrate, which was the cause of the blast, was shipped in by a Moldovan-flagged ship called MV Rhosus the most recent owner of which is a Cyprus-based Russian businessman, Igor Grechushkin. The cargo entered the port in 2013 and it was stored there for six years without proper safety measures.
Blaming Ukraine on Russian-affiliated events or controversies is a recurring element of pro-Kremlin disinformation. A similar example was seen when some pro-Kremlin disinformation elements blamed Ukraine for the downing of the MH17 plane in 2014.
