Disinfo: The US and its allies are trying to reignite the clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Summary

The US and its allies are trying to reignite the animosity between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Armenia. The main NATO countries try to hide the fact that they are irritated by the agreement on a ceasefire in Nagorno Karabakh, brokered with the active participation of Russia. The US and its allies are upset because the war was stopped through Moscow’s mediation, which neutralised their years of work aiming to expel Russia from the South Caucasus. The US and the EU don’t want to tolerate the power balance in place in the region, so in order to dismantle it they thought og nothing better than trying to reignite the conflict.

Disproof

The story brings together several recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about Russia as the ultimate target of international events, an ever-aggressive West and NATO always conspiring to destabilise whole regions of the world, and long-term plans to encircle Russia.

Contrary to the claim, there is nothing indicating that Western countries are irritated by the ceasefire agreement in Nagorno Karabakh nor by the role played by Russia on it, much less that they are conspiring for a return to armed clashes. On the contrary, the European Union welcomed the agreement, and the US and France issued a joint statement admitting that Russia’s actions contributed to peace in Nagorno-Karabakh while asking for more details on the agreement.

See other examples in our database, such as as claims that clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh are part of an Anaconda Ring plan against Russia, that events in Belarus are part of a hybrid war organised from abroad, that Moscow prevented a colour revolution in Kyrgyzstan, that extremists and Nazis are being trained in Ukraine to act in Belarus, or that Angela Merkel is the handler of Belarusian and Russian opposition leaders Tsikhanouskaya and Navalny.

Soros wants to destroy Armenia through the Karabakh war

The conflict in Karabakh is an attempt to liquidate Armenia. George Soros was behind the (election of) Armenian leader Nikol Pashinyan and their goal was that.

Disproof

This is the recurring pro-Kremlin narrative that the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is coordinated by the West.

Another linked regular theme touted by pro-Kremlin media is the allegation that Armenian leader Nikol Pashinyan is controlled by George Soros.

Kyiv modernises WWII mines to use against Russia

The Ukrainian military has updated Soviet World War II “anchor mines”. They are to be used in the Black Sea, presumably against Russian ships. It should be noted that in fact, Ukraine lost its fleet back in 2014: just when the final collapse of the country began after the coup d’état. And if there is no fleet, only mines remain to fight at sea.

Disproof

Pro-Kremlin disinformation about Ukraine and its alleged aggression against Russia.

The private company "Technocluster", which is part of the Scientific and Production Corporation "Cleaver" has indeed handed over a batch of restored ship mines (so-called "small anchor" and "contact anti-landing" versions of products) to the Ministry of Defence.

”Moldovan maidan” did not happen because Soros’s person came to power

Those protest actions that were being prepared, the Moldovan Maidan, it did not happen, because George Soros did what he intended to – brought his person to power.

Disproof

A recurring disinformation narrative claiming that Moldovan opposition was preparing mass protests that had to happen after the elections. This narrative goes hand in hand with recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation about George Soros as an organizer of "colour revolutions" around the globe.

A run-off vote in the Moldovan presidential elections took place on November 15. Maia Sandu, a pro-Western candidate, defeated current president Igor Dodon, the Moscow-backed candidate. The president-elect has always favoured closer ties with Europe, for which she became the target of the pro-Kremlin media who tend to label her as an "agent" of George Soros and of the West. The evidence used to support these claims is that some members of her team have received training and/ or scholarships from programmes funded by George Soros or worked at Soros Foundation Moldova.
