Disinfo: US and NATO activities in the Black Sea are ‘hybrid war’ instruments to encircle Russia

Summary

US and NATO activities in the Black Sea are ‘hybrid war’ instruments aimed at encircling and containing Russia. These activities are conducted through puppet states like Georgia and Ukraine.

Disproof

Recurring disinformation narrative about NATO claiming that the West is waging a hybrid war against Russia. This narrative fits into the broader disinformation theme about the West’s allegedly belligerent and hostile agenda against Russia, and about its alleged plans to destabilise and encircle Russia.

There is no factual evidence to support the article’s claim that the US and NATO are conducting a hybrid war to undermine Russian influence in the Black Sea area.

Both Ukraine and Georgia are Black Sea states and NATO is a defensive alliance, whose purpose is to protect its member states. The primary aim of the alliance is to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security and territorial integrity of its members. NATO follows strict procedures and emphasises transparency during military training exercises, which are announced months in advance and are subject to international scrutiny.

Disinfo: Western special services brought a new virus to Russia

According to information published two weeks ago, a new virus has appeared in Russia, which is very similar to the coronavirus, but has other complications. It has been assumed that amid the pandemic, Western special services have declared a biological war on Russia and brought a new virus into the country, that is, the West is now fighting Russia in the name of the pandemic and has no other choice.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation about the coronavirus and about biological weapons, alleging that the West is pursuing a belligerent and hostile agenda and wages biological war on Russia.

Pro-Kremlin outlets often claim the West, and especially, the US, develop biological weapons in laboratories around the world and, particularly, across the Russian borders. Similar claims have been repeatedly debunked by independent fact-checkers and experts who have visited the sites in question and found nothing suspicious. Most of these labs are actively engaged in fighting dangerous diseases and viruses, including COVID-19.

Disinfo: The US is provoking Russia due to the decline of its hegemony

The US has lost its superiority, and due to the decline of its hegemony, it resorts to acts of provocation against Russia in a failed attempt to affect its defence. The US has looked for allies to keep its perennial harassment of Russia in the Baltic countries and in Ukraine after the 2014 Maidan, in order to stay close to the Russian border. Russia has been for many years the main enemy of the West, as it possesses 37 per cent of the world’s resources and the biggest mineral reserves. This harassment will continue, as the US goal is to stop the development of anybody who challenges its hegemony over the world order.

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about a hostile West attempting to encircle Russia and about this country as the victim of ceaseless machinations to curb its development.

There is no factual evidence to support the claim that the US is trying to provoke Moscow, or that the Baltic states and Ukraine harass Russia. On the contrary, these countries have been a frequent target of Russian aggression, including election interference, disinformation, cyberattacks or, in the case of Ukraine, the illegal annexation of part of its territory and the engineering of an armed conflict in its eastern regions. Accusing others of the misdeeds that Russia is actually doing is a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation technique.

Disinfo: Ukraine was created by Lenin, Stalin, and Khrushchev

Ukraine as a state emerged precisely during the period of communist rule, starting with Ulyanov (Lenin) (who added Novorossiya to Ukraine), Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (added Western regions of Ukraine), and, finally, Nikita Khrushchev (Crimea).

Disproof

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative denigrating the history of Ukraine and its statehood.

The history of Ukraine dates back to the era of the Kyivan Rus’ in the 9th-13th centuries. A fully independent Ukraine only emerged in the 20th century, after long periods of successive domination by Poland-Lithuania, Russia, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). In the aftermath of World War I and the disintegration of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires two states were created: the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) and the West Ukrainian People's Republic. They merged into a unified state - the Ukrainian People's Republic - on 22 January 1919.
